New Canon DC330 w/MovieFactory 5.6 can't transfer to compute
I can't get my software to recognize that the DVD camcorder is connected via the USB cable. Do I need to do something? I know the USB port works since I use it a lot to transfer stills from my still camera. Sorry if I'm not giving much info, but I don't know what else is needed.
I think in the setup menu of your camcorder you may have to make a change to one of the settings.
Usually, it's something like setting the usb port to "Computer".
I know these cams have this setting because in one mode if you want to print pictures directly to a printer you can connect the usb cable directly to the printer and print them directly to a printer without using a computer.
So where ever that feature is in your cam I think you need to change the usb MODE to Computer.
I looked up the specs for your camcorder and it appears to write to a mini-dvd, its this correct?
If that is the case then you make sure you finalize the dvd while it's in the camcorder.
Then you put the mini-dvd into the computers dvd reader and in MF you use the "Import DVD-VR" import feature to extract the videos into the MF program. When you use the importing module make sure to put a "Check" in the box of the video(s) you to import, then that will make the import of OK button become active.
The usual method when one records to a mini-dvd is to use the above procedure and put the mini-dvd into your computer and import the contents of the mini-dvd.
One important thing is you have to finalize the mini-dvd while it's in the recorder. If your using DVD-RW disc's I don't think you have to finalize, the camcorder will take care of that, I think.

If the dvd is a rewriteable DVD-RW or DVD+RW it's probably written in the UDF 2.1 format which you system cannot read (XP)
If you used a DVD-R disk it should work.
DVD-R and DVD-RW's have to be finalized.
But, MF will read the disk if you go into MF and select import disk, so if you did use a dvd-rw or a re-writeable disk try that.
Some may tell you to install packet writing software to read the disk. I don't recommend that if MF can import the disk.
On my recorders when I use a dvd-rw disk and record in the -VR mode I have to finalize the dvd-rw disk. XP cannot read the disk but MF can read it and import the videos using the Import DVD-VR disk function accessible from the MF program main timeline OR from the MF Launcher screen that should say Import Disk.

disk type
I did use a DVD-RW. The disc was finalized. Tonight I am trying a DVD-R. It doesn't need to be initialized, but I will finalize it. I'm trying to get all the bugs worked out B4 I start videoing for our high school football team in a few weeks. Thanks
NewfieMom,
On my recorders when I use a dvd-rw disk I have 2 options to format them in. It's possible your new dvd-rw's are already pre-formatted to the UDF 2.01 spec.
These are my 2 options:
1) - DVD-Video (Treats a DVD-RW as if it was a DVD-R, difference is you can erase the DVD-RW disk and re-use it again)
2) - The -VR Mode
You may have the same options available. If you did record a dvd-rw in DVD-Video mode it's the same as writing to a standard dvd-r. You cannot edit the video, when using the -VR mode one can edit the video (trim & make cuts).
One thing when using a cam that records to a mini-disc is you can end up with many small videos (hard to work with), if you can pause the video instead of stopping then you will have bigger files.
I don't know if your cam can do that. The point is every time you start & stop a recording a new video file will be created. Then using the computer you will have to learn how to join all those video files.
Recording in the -VR format is actually a better method, MF will join all the videos when importing or you can select them individually. It's been awhile since I've imported -VR dvd's. I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
I'm also not sure what version of MF your working with. I'm using MF6+ when referencing importing mini-dvd's.

MF versioon
I have MF5 I think. I do pause my camera between shots. I only turn it off if it's going to be a few minutes until the next shot and if I'm running on a battery.
It will be interesting tonight to find out if shooting onto a DVD-R works better.

Canon DC330 and MovieFactory 5.6
Well, this MovieFactory 5.6 is a total fasco so far. It simply does not work as advertized and as it describes in its manual. It will not convert a finalized DVD in the camcorder onto a DVD-R or DVD-RW. Some bloke in a user review says that it will only write to + DVDs. I received a reply back from Canon support and they don't even know their cameras come bundled with Corel software. Corel support says it is no longer supported by them. Some of the advice I see on this forum appears to be by people who have never seen a Canon camcoder. Does anyone know why every user review I read on the internet describes the same problem I am having.

Are you trying to import the contents of the DVD disc from your camcorder into MovieFactory so that you can create a DVD with Menus and then burn onto a full size DVD disc, OR are you attempting to copy the existing mini DVD disc from your camcorder onto a full size disc "as is?"
If you are doing the first one - then take the DVD disc out of your camcorder and place it inside the computers DVD tray, then use the import from DVD function.
If you are trying to do the second one then again take the DVD out of the camcorder and put it into the computers DVD tray. From the quick launch menu select "Copy Disc."
