When creating a DVD chances are less than 50% that the disc will be created without the program locking up and I have to start all over again. Today alone I tried three separate times to create a DVD and each time after 90% of the rendering being accomplished the program locks up and shuts down.
I read the topics and found out that updating DirectX might be a solution. Couldn't find a number for the files in my current DirectX files, but the files go back to 2004. I'm downloading the June 2008 copy of DirectX now.
The video I'm currently trying to create is 1.81 GB size and runs for 1.25 hours. I have many transitions. Is there any other solution you might recommend to a novice to avoid crashes when creating a DVD disc?
Thank you for any and all suggestions!
Phillip

Hi
It may be best to render the video prior to doing Share Create Disc.

Creating a DVD disc
Thanks Trevor,
Downloading the latest 'DirectX' didn't seem to help. I tried to create a disc and again at 90% complete, 'converting the title', I receive the shut down notice.
How do I render a 'vsp' after it has been created? I checked the with online help and it told me the advantages of rendering but only how to activate after placing the first clip on the timeline. Can you do it upon completing of the project?
I read your 'quick guide notes' at the bottom of your reply and was wondering if 'creating a video file' would elimenate this problem and allow me afterwards to create a disc without going through the rendering process??
Again, thank you for your help.

I get the impression that you have a VideoStudio Project file in the authoring phase. Instead of that, after completing your editing (getting rid of stuff, adding titles, transitions, music etc) go to the [Share Tab] and select
[Create Video File] - then select either PAL DVD or NTSC DVD depending upon what part of the world you are in.
Once it has created that new video start a new blank project.
Go directly to the [Share] tab and select [Create Disc] now import that video you just made and then try to create a DVD.

Hi Philip
I¡¦ll try to explain a little.
I¡¦m assuming you intending to create a DVD
When we start Video Studio in editor mode we are looking at a ¡¥video studio project¡¦.
A *.VSP This is a small file containing the project information.
We add our video files to the timeline.
It would be good if you can provide details of the video files you are using.
Right click one of the video clips in the timeline/library and select properties, what are they?
We continue to build our project adding images, transitions, audio titles etc.
Saving the project from File-Save or Save As we give it a name.
OK we have completed the editing. The project is open with all clips in the timeline.
We need to create a video file
To do this Share Create Video File
You have several options, sometimes it depends on your source video properties, that¡¦s why we need to know what they are.?
Normally you would select NTSC-DVD This provides for one hour of digital video.
How long is your project?????????????
If longer than one hour give some details.
Select a save location and give the file a new name.
The process, rendering will convert your project to one file, an mpeg 2 file.
It takes some time to complete.
This is the file that is used to burn your DVD.
To do that we start a NEW project (File New Project)
Share Create Disc
Now you ADD your Mpeg 2 file
From the ADD Media select the ADD Video files option, browse the hard drive for your video file. (do NOT add a VSP file)
Create your menu, keep it simple by using the Thumbnail¡¦ option from the Gallery.
Continue to the final window an Burn a DVD

Creating a DVD disc
Thank you Trevor and sjj1805 for your imput. Since receiving your messages I tried 'creating a video file' while I had the vsp open. When I saw the word 'rendering' I thought I was finally home free. It took quite a while and I had other chores to do. When I returned to my computer, the rendering for 'create a video file' had stopped and their was the familiar error message waiting for me.
After re-reading the messages again, I opened VisualStudio but did not bring up the project. I went to 'Share' and the only option available was, 'create a disc'. I chose it and selected the file location of the project. The number of GB was smaller than previous attempts and it worked. It created the disc.
Now, does this make sense to you guys, or was it just a fluke? If it makes sense then, needless to say, I continue to create future discs this way??
Or, should I...The next time I start a new project, select 'SmartRendering' to avoid this problem? Then as I continue to create this new project does it automatically update the 'rendering' while I'm creating it, or do I have to do the same thing I just explained above before burning a disc?
Again, thanks for your help and all the input.
Phillip

Hi Phillip
First of all its good that you have successfully created your dvd, at least that¡¦s an improvement.
Failure of the render process is annoying to say the least, but without a lot more information not only regarding your project but your PC, any recommendation is a little difficult.
I have no idea why one process failed and the other was ok.
Do you defragment your hard drives?
Do you turn of background processes, disconnect from the internet for example before rendering.
An incoming e-mail during rendering can cause problems.
Your project
I assume you are using video files in your timelines.
1 / What process did you use to capture your video? From a camcorder, VHS, DVD recoreder???????
2 / What type are these video files?
3 / What are the properties of the video files?
Right click a video file in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
If they are compatible DVD Mpeg 2 video files, use these properties when you finally create a video file either from the timeline or in the burner module. So again what are the properties of your video files.?
The higher compressed files downloaded from the internet ie DivX may cause problems.

Creating a DVD disc
Hi Trevor,
Thanks for all your help. Since my last response I've created two disc and have had no further problems.
I never have any other program running while operating the 'create video disc'. I usually find it as a great time to go do some other thing like a household chore.
I have a dialup ISP connection, so emails don't drop in without me checking. Infact, I usually go online and check what I have at the ISP site. With dialup, I sometimes have to throw out large files, like photos, sent by well meaning friends and which would take hours to download.
I often clean and defrag my harddrive. I do this especially after a half dozen shut downs with VideoStudio.
I assume you are using video files in your timelines? Yes. Videos and Images.
What type are these video files? 0.5 hour discs created in my Sony Camcorder and then transfered to a Sony Computer program called a 'Picture Motion Browser'. Then using VideoStudio I import them into the library.
What are the properties of the video files? MPEG 2
I only use the Internet as little as possible for emails and possibly shopping on Amazon. I'm in my mid-sixties and the Internet doesn't captivate me. With a dialup I hardly ever download anything except updates. I haven't learned about DivX yet.
Again, thanks for your concern and responses. Both you and sjj1805 have been a real blessing!
