i am using vs8, i have some video clips that i need to trim but when i try i get an error saying " this AVI codec ID cannot be trimmed" any suggestions?

I am afraid we are going to need a lot more information before we can give a sensible answer. In the first place, there are over 800 different video formats which call themselves .avi. In other words, that is just a wrapper or carrier format. So we need to know the exact properties of the files your are using. Please right click on one of them within Video Studio -- either in the timeline or in the library window -- and copy *all* its properties here please.

one video clip says divx and the others say ms-yuv....is this enough info?

here is more info,says file type......microsoft avi file,under video compression says divx codec and under audio says mpeg layer 3

the other clip says under file type microsoft avi files-open dml,under video compression says microsoft yuv and under audio says pcm.

Right click on a clip and copy EVERYTHING here.

this is too much of a headache,ultimately the problem is i am using this useless software called videostudio.......and people should either help or keep quiet......switched to cyberlink power director and it solves my problem....will even do HD,think i will use my videostudio cd as a coaster or a frisbee.

Sorry you feel that way, but with the little bit of info that you provided I don't know how you expected anyone to provide you with meaningful help. Good luck with your other software.. Oh and when you run into troubles with it, see if you can find a web board such as this, and provide them with the same amount of info you have here. You'll probably have better results..

not frustrated,just dont like being jerked around....i provided the info,whats next? want a copy of the video clip as well? and so far cyberlink has done more than expected,it is letting me trim and edit a variety of clips that videostudio wont.....you have been polite and respectful vidoman but these other jerkoffs that keep posting "click here and read" should find another way to spend their time or find themselves another hobby......as far as support for the "other" product goes....whats the difference? its not like i got any help here.

Flint, I would not blame the forum. They have helped me with the learning curve of using VS but now I am having second thoughts myself about VS 11.5 +. I do all my editing and save often. I have about 4 projects that won't open. You know how many hours I worked on them and now I can't open them to work on or burn a DVD. Not a happy camper!

This is why we ask for more information, and need it to help...

1. You running VS8? A lot has changed since VS8, including how the program or if the program can handle certain codecs or file types. DivX has even changed dramatically. I try to keep all updated and current, but was surprised to find just yesterday, that my DivX was in need of updating. It's plausible that the current DivX encoder may not work properly with older VS programs.

2. Is your version of VS8 a full or SE version? This makes a huge difference. SE versions come bundled with hardware like video and capture cards. Those hardware manufacturers will tweak the SE version to work with their hardware. They are not full-featured versions, some things just don't work in them, why? Because they are designed to get you to buy the program, like a non-expiring trial version..

Now you compare your old, obsolete, phased-out version of VS8 to a newer product, is that really fair? I still have VS8 full version installed on one of my machines (just to provide help here), and am still able to run it. VS8 did have some bugs, but was able to use it.

Now to answer your original question, DivX is a very highly compressed video file type. It is intended for distribution not editing. Yes we know that it is possible, however that is not what it is meant for. If you understood codecs you would see why programs fail when trying to edit them.

MicroSoft YUV is a Color Space Converter contained in the AVI carrier or wrapper. You can read more about it HERE

Again VS8 is an old version and some current file types just can not be successfully edited with it..

Flint69, the amount of information you provided us is nearly useless. It's like going to a mechanic and saying I have a '72 Chevy with a 3.5 liter engine, why won't it run?

None of us work for Corel. We are simply users of the product who try to help people. You are using a product that is nearly 4 years old. We have no idea if you are using Vista, XP, or which of the 100s of version of avi you are using, etc., because you are too stubborn or thick-headed to supply us with even the most basic information. I would bet that if you were using a 4 year old Cyberlink product that it would not work correctly either.

This jerkoff, for one, is glad you are moving on.
