I too had the 62% "hang" problem when importing discs made on my Panasonic into VS9.
The following has fixed the problem 100% for me.
Get hold of a small free tool called FixVTS (www.videohelp.com/tools/FixVTS).
Copy (using drag/drop) your DVD onto your hard drive. Run FixVTS and drop one of the .VOB files onto it. Click FullDVD. FixVTS will take a minute or two to do its work.
You should now be able to import the DVD (from the hard drive, obviously) into VS.
