Video Studio 9 Bug List
VS9 Problem List 4/24/05
(1) Corrupts video files made from projects created from Mpeg files in prior versions (e.g., 8) of Video Studio. Work around: Turn off Smart Render when creating video file.
(2) VS9 installation (causes) Windows Media Player to show 4:3 video files in 8:5 aspect ratio. Problem disappears when VS9 is uninstalled (reported, not verified).
(3) Can’t set Dolby as sound property in Project Properties.
(4) Create Disk, still completely re-renders compliant videos if selected with clips in the timeline and properties are set to match. I experienced a VS9 crash.
Save as Still Image problems.
(5) If you have Project Properties set to 16x9 and introduce a video clip into the timeline, then save one of its frames as a sill jpeg image, all the color disappears from the jpeg and it has prominent horizontal scan lines. If you set the Project Properties to 4:3 and save as still image, the color is OK.
(6) If you have Project Properties set to 16x9 and select a 16x9 video clip into the Library, then save one of its frames as a sill jpeg image, it is saved as an 8:5 aspect ratio with image squeezed horizontally (even if :Keep Aspect Ratio is checked in Preferences).
(7) “Save as Still Image” control and menu item is not always consistent with menu Tools/Save Current Frame as Image.” Why are there so many controls that (seem to) do (almost?) the same thing?
Interference with the Timeline display. Result: User has to manually reset the timeline display in the middle of complicated edit procedure. Very tedious and time wasting for large projects.
(8) If you press Mark-In or Mark-Out while a video clip is previewing from the Library, the VS9 unhelpfully resets the timeline display to the beginning.
Continual interference with the library display. Result: User has to manually reset Library display and manually scroll to previous position within display. Very tedious and time wasting for large projects.
(9) If you click on an audio clip in the timeline, VS9, unhelpfully, sets the library display to the show Audio clips.
(10) If you click on a video clip in the timeline, VS9, unhelpfully, sets the library display to the show Video clips.
(11) If you click on a image clip in the timeline, VS9, unhelpfully, sets the library display to the show Video clips.
(12) If you click on a Title clip in the timeline, VS9, unhelpfully, sets the library display to the show Titles.
Regressions
(13) If you delete an icon in the Library, VS no longer asks if you want to delete the file. Result: User has to maintain Windows Explorer in execution, and remember to save the file name before deleting icon, then manually delete file. Edit: Using Shift-Delete restores the file delete option.
EDIT 5/4/05:
Edit Mode Problems
(14) When I did a Save Trimmed Video of a video clip shot at 16x9, captured at 4:3 to 4:3 aspect ratio VS9 crashes with error signature: AppName: vstudio.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.0 ModName: mpgmux.dll ModVer: 1.1.1.59 Offset: 0000fa3e.
(15) After VS9 crashes, it offers to recover your project file but sometimes recovers the wrong one. Project file name is not recovered.
(16) After using Save Trimmed Video with 16x9 captured clips, using STV on 4:3 captured clips results in horizontally stretched video clips that have a 4:3 aspect ratio property. Work around: Quit and Restart VS9. Then STV works properly.
(17) Occasional VS9 lockup while clicking preview window jog control. (no error report)
(18) Occasional crash during Save Trimmed Video with error: AppName: vstudio.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.0 ModName: mpgmux.dll ModVer: 1.1.1.59 Offset: 0000fa3e

Hi jchunter, I've recently purchased VS9 and joined this forum, but on reading the negative reports about Studio 9 I'm beginning to think it was a mistake. It's great to have a forum like this where knowledgeable people like yourself can help people like me, but lets face it we are the customers and people like yourself should not have to do the work for Ulead, we've paid for a product that should be working as advertised.
So lets hope they will respond? as they seem to have quite a lot of unhappy people. Bri

Bri,
IMHO, video editing software is on the leading edge of software evolution. The first video editing products were quite difficult to use (e.g., Pinnacle) and really only suitable for pros. Products such as Video Studio try to make it easier for newbies but they haven't got the ease of use features quite worked out yet.
IMHO, VS9 is much more stable and functional than VS8 and I don't hesitate to recommend using it. The reason I post the problem list is to let users know what to watch out for and what work-arounds are available. Ulead does monitor this forum.

About (13), many user do not like the behavior before UVS8.
They delete the file incautious usually.
So the behavior for UVS9 will be changed. ^_^

Bug experiences
Thanks, jchunter.
I experienced (2). I ripped a DVD with DVD decrypter, imported with VS9, cut a piece from it, and used "create video file." When played with Windows Media Player 9, it had a black stripe, even though this stripe doesn't appear in VS9.
In addition, I am having trouble importing from DVDs. Typically there are several titles, each of which has various chapters. Often some of these chapters are the same. If I select a title, chapters often aren't imported correctly -- e.g. a title that is supposed to be 15 minutes long comes in at 59 minutes, because a bunch of "continuous play" titles were picked up with it. These are not inputted correctly, because an attempt to play them in the timeline crashes VS9. A work around is to only import chapters. I have not experienced the problem when I never select titles, only chapters.
I upgraded from VS 7 (itself a VS6 upgrade) so importing DVDs is new for me; previously I used DVD2AVI, with much less functionality. If this works, I'm pretty happy with it.
Finally, I strongly agree with 13. I think it is a major nuisance not to delete the file when I delete the thumbnail. Pretty much I never delete the thumbnail when I don't want to delete the file. Workaround: tell it to store the files in an easily accessible place.
Quibble: I converted an hour long mpeg, which originally came from a 13GB AVI, to AVI. It was 109 GB. Is that what full quality AVIs look like? I thought 13GB/hour was "full" AVI quality, and if so, what is the other 96GB?

DV AVI is compressed at a rate of about 5:1.
Uncompressed AVI will be five times larger, but couldn't possibly contain more detail than the original compressed file you started with -- you are seeing the exact same thing you would see if you viewed the DV video.
Thus, there's no point in going to uncompressed AVI.

JCHunter, you have done a good job in ferreting out some of the bugs in VS9. I strongly agree with you on the regression of item #13. I liked the old way in VS8 of deleting the thumbnail and having the option of deleting the file in the same window. Now it takes me a couple of extra steps to delete the file, after I gotten rid of the thumbnail. The good news is that I have found VS9 to be a lot more stable than VS7, so it is was still worth it for me to upgrad to VS9

Joosuna,
I agree. I certainly liked the old method better. I keep deleting icons and then wondering what the file name was - but then it is too late. BTW, if you try to undo the delete, it doesn't work. Undoing just increases the confusion by undoing your last edit - which you just might want. I am ending up with a lot of junk video files.

VIDEOSTUDIO 9:
If you want to delete a file from the library do it the SAME way windows does.
Highlight the icon.
Hold down the "SHIFT" key and either hit the delete key
or
While holding down the shift key right click on the icon and select delete.
This method prevents people from deleting their videos accidentally
AND
The videos are in the "Windows Trash Bin" which is another backup
feature.
I like this method much better than the previous since it uses the same
keystrokes that we all learn to use when running windows.

Did some testing tonight. My comments in BLUE;
VS9 Problem List 4/24/05
Nope. Not with old MSPro MPEG files either. Also tried MPEG files created with the Matrox RT.X100 realtime cards MediaExport module (Ligos encoder).
Not here. Everything played in MediaPlayer is in the expected aspect ratio.
Not necessary. Dolby is decoded on the fly regardless of the project audio setting, just as is done in MSPro. The only time you need to concern yourself with it are in the export options.
Confirmed. Workaround: save the project and empty the timeline. Forwarding to VS9 team.
Save as Still Image problems.
Partially confirmed. If you use the Tools item then the image is monochromatic and artifacted.
If, on the other hand, you select the clip and use the Save as Still Image icon then the image is saved correctly.
Forwarding to VS9 team.
Even when saving using the Tools menu item the image is still in the correct aspect ratio when viewed by image viewers like IrfanView and when placed on the VS9 timeline.
These images do, however, display an incorrect aspect ratio in the VS9 preview window when viewed from the library . Forwarding to VS9 team.
The only inconsistancy I see is the Tools menu having a bug but the icon control working correctly.
Select either item and you get an image.
Set the editor prefs for BMP you get BMP.
Set it for JPG and you get JPG.
Set it for 16:9 and you get 16:9.
What more do you want?
Sounds like you want timeline cues. They aren't in VS9 but are in MSPro, whose forte' is large complex projects.
Workaround: you can put a cut where you would otherwise set a cue then use the pointers context menu to jump to the next/last segment.
Not here. I can play the library clip in the preview window, hitting markin/markout as it plays then drag the clip from the library to the timeline with the changes intact.
That's because it brings up the Music & Voice attributes panel. You're working with an audio track, so you get audio controls and the audo library. I'd think it were weird if it did otherwise.
Same as #9. It's just bringing up the appropriate controls for the filetype you're now working on, which also brings up the appropriate library.

Regressions
This was a nice feature, but it was also responsible for a lot of accidental deletions and these could be very frustrating. 'tis better to use the program prefs to save any Temporary files in a folder of your choosing then manage them as noted above or with a file manager/explorer.

Terry,
The most serious problem is number one. Every project that existed before VS9 that I have loaded into VS9 and then created a video file has resulted in a seriously corrupt file. I have tried five projects now and do not see much point in trying another. ( BTW, I have no problem with any new project created in VS9 or any newly captured video.)
The fact that you were unable to reproduce the problem does not reduce the need for Ulead to address this problem ASAP. If you have some old mpeg projects, please try them in VS9.
As for VS9 jerking around the Timeline display and Library displays, I find these to be terribly time wasting when actually trying to edit a real video project. These are sometimes known as "self-inflicted side effects" because they are clearly there by design - IMHO, bad design. They have been there at least since VS7. There are many reasons that a user might click on an object in the timeline display and NOT want the Library to change. For me, that's 95% of the time. When I want the Library to change I will change it. The biggest problem is that when I am working on a large project, I have to scroll each library into position and that takes a lot of time. Yes, I make extensive use of custom library folders and no, this does not solve the problem.
Its curious that you do not see a problem with WMP because I see the aspect ratio problem even with new VS9 projects and video captures...
Maybe we should email offline to see if we are actually doing the same experiment...

Yes, I make extensive use of custom library folders and no, this does not solve the problem.
Its curious that you do not see a problem with WMP because I see the aspect ratio problem even with new VS9 projects and video captures...
Maybe we should email offline to see if we are actually doing the same experiment...

I'm also getting an aspect ratio problem and waiting for a reply from the support people. It is occuring for me when capturing or using video that has a pseudo-widescreen format on the digital camera (ie the camera puts black bars at the top and bottom of the picture but it is not true widescreen). The signal is still 4:3 but ends up being marked as 16:9 (UK resolution). Windows media player then plays it as a compressed widescreen film. Also, once captured, VS9 also sees it as widescreen in edit and all other functions. ALSO, Windows Movie Maker 2 now has the same thing happen when it is used to capture video. I am now having to use VS7 to capture and render video in pseudo widescreen. It can then be safely used in WMP for playing or VS9 for further editing.

Well, I am midway through what will be a 50 minute wedding video. I have each of my raw capture files in the library. I am using Save Trimmed Video (STV) to create the good clips by breaking them at the blooper points. After each STV, I insert the new clip at the END of the timeline.
Now, my project is long enough that the END of the timeline display is FAR removed from the origin. But, every *&%^# time I press Mark-In and Mark-Out on the preview window to set the begin/end boundaries for STV, !*#@* VS9, resets the timeline to the origin and I have to manually put it back where it belongs - at the END, where the next clip goes!
How many Video Studio Users appreciate this behavior: resetting the timeline to the origin every time you press Mark-In or Mark-Out?
John
BTW, I have updated the bug list (above) with several more bugs.

VS 8 vs VS 9
So even with all these bugs would you say VS 9 is better or worse than VS 8...
Right now i'm debating on if I should upgrade or not. All I've seen in the forums is list of problems with the program. Did VS 8 have just as many problems when it first came out?
I'd appreciate any and all advice on this matter.
Thank you
