VS9: Video Save Profiles keep disappearing

Hi everyone,
I seem to have a problem creating (or, actually, retrieving) custom Video Save profiles.
From the Share tab, I select Create Video File. Then, Save As type: Windows Media Video then Options...
In the Profiles tab of Video Save Options, I pick a Windows Media Video 9 that is close to what I might need (although this step seems unnecessary, given what follows) then click on Customize to open the Manage Profiles menu. Then, I click on the New... button and create/edit the profile I wish to use.
I then click on OK to save the profile, then Close from the Manage Profiles window (the only options are Close and Help).
However, here's where the problem crops up: the new profile is not listed in the Profiles pulldown list in the Video Save Options menu.
A couple of other related items:
1. All my created (and edited) profiles are there in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles
2. If I edit an existing profile (instead of creating a new one) the edited profile DISAPPEARS from the pulldown list, even though it was there (and available for selection) before I edited it. It's still there in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles folder, though.
Thanks in advance for your help; it is much appreciated.
Best regards,
Ed

To create a permanent template (or 'profile' if you prefer, since that is the term used in relation to Windows media), you have to use Tools > Make Movie Template Manager. Otherwise, the way you are doing it will only, as you have found, apply to the single project you have used it with.
I cannot help with your two specific profiles questions as they relate to Windows Media Components, and I tend never to use .wmv/.asf files. It was my understand that the folder you mention is installed by Windows Media Encoder 9. Do you mean to say it contains variants on the default WMV profiles which you have created or edited in VS, or in some other program?

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I did search for a solution, and came across your answer to an earlier similar query to save the desired profile via Tools > Make Movie Template Manager. I tried that before I posted originally but the problem is exactly the same from the Template Options... Profile tab therein. Any profile I create after hitting Customize is not there to be selected in the Profile dropdown list when I get back to that tab. Although it _is_ in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles folder afterwards.
I need to use .wmv format due to client requirements, and so am kinda stuck there.
BTW, the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles folder also contains all of the Ulead (Neptune and WMV) profiles, as well as any created in WM Encoder 9. In any case, I am pretty sure that folder appeared when VS9 was installed, but I could be wrong on that.
Thanks again for the help.
Best regards,
Ed

The Nepture and other profiles are Windows Media Encoder 9 creations, not especially for VS or created in VS. I have had VS11.5 on this computer since I bought it, and until I installed Windows Media Encoder 9 a few weeks ago, I did not have those profiles available to me in VS. So that explains -- to me at least -- why they are in the two places. As for such a folder existing for VS 9, well it could have been there if you had installed Windows Media Encoder 8 or previous versions of it. I know that WME 8 profiles seemed to come as part of VS11/11.5+ because that was essentially all I had available to me if I chose the .wmv option. Now I have Nepture etc, but, to repeat myself, they only appeared after I had installed WME 9...
As for your continuing problem is getting a new template to 'stick', I am not sure what to suggest there. As a test, I just opened VS11.5 > Tools > Make Movie Templates Manager, then selected New, with WMV as the format. I gave the new template a name then selected Edit where I could change elements in the profile. After getting out of it, then next time I went to Share > Create Video File, there was my new template in the drop-down list. It is NOT in the list of wmv profiles if you choose Share > Create Video File > WMV. But it is in the main drop down menu (Share > Create Video File), in this case, just above Custom at the very bottom of the drop down list. In other words, it is a completely separate choice from Share > Create Video File > WMV.

Ken,
I agree with (and my experience mirrors) all that you wrote, with two exceptions:
First, after "...then selected Edit where I could change elements in the profile. After getting out of it, ..." I cannot select my newly edited profile to save/use in the template.
Second, since the Neptune (and a couple of the WMV) profiles are named "Ulead_Neptune_<Good/Better/Best>Quality" and e.g. "Ulead - WMV HD 720p NTSC Standard," I'm pretty sure they were put there by VS9 on install.
Thanks again,
Ed

Hmm. You are of course right about Ulead_Neptune. Now, of course, I can't remember if they were there before or after I installed WME 9. As I said, my problem is that I almost never use .wmv as one of my usual formats...
But I am still mystified as to why your customised template is not saved as part of the general drop down (or separately as one of the profiles that you can select in the C:\Program Files folder you reference. For what it is worth, the new template I created still exists in VS11.5+ (I have opened and closed the program a couple of times since my test post above). But it is not listed in the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Profiles folder...
Problem Solved--finally!!

Ken,
Thanks again for your time and efforts. Fortunately, through extensive trial and error, I've finally "figured it out." :D
First of all, I discovered that there are "Neptune" encoder profiles also in the C:\Program Files\Ulead\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0\Neptune_profile folder, but these have _slightly_ different names e.g. "Neptune_MediumQuality" (vs "Ulead_Neptune_MediumQuality" in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles ). Note that the latter is the folder from which the two VS9 methods (Tools > Make Movie Manager and Create Video File...Custom) for managing rendering profiles do their locating and saving of the encoding profiles.
Second, here's the solution to my problem: Although I am trying to produce WMV video-only files (I have no sound, nor is any needed for this project), VS9 will not find encoding profiles that are video only--THEY MUST HAVE A SOUND ENCODER DEFINED (even if it's only the " 0 kbps, 8 kHz, mono CBR" setting) in order to "show up" in the dropdown selection list.
In other words, even though a properly created (as far as the Windows Media Profile Editor that VS9 calls is concerned) video-only profile is made, VS won't find it unless it is a Video-Audio profile, even if it's going to be encoding a totally silent sound track!!!
Thank you again for your help.
Best regards,
Ed
