Creating MP4 H.264 for iPhone

Post by Dieselboy502 »

I am able to create iPod files using MP4 H.264 at 320 x 240 but cannot find a way to create them at 480 x 320 for iPhone. Even if I pull up the custom menu it has the user defined dimensions greyed out. I am using 11+ with Vista x64. Any ideas?

Thanks for your response. I guess the next question is where do I get the Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V3 because that is not displayed as an option on my screen?

This is a very old codec. You can get it from MicroSoft's website. However it will only install on Win98se, WinME, or Win 2000. I did try to install it on my Vista machine, and it rejected it. So I tried running compatibility mode as WinXP, rejected. It did install running compatibility mode as Win98 however VS11 still does not see the codec...

Well if this is an old codec it will probably be no good for creating H.264 anyway. Does anyone know another way to create user defined dimensions for iPhone?

Just found the following on Wikipedia about Microsoft MPEG-4 V3
Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V3 MP43 Video for Windows-based codec. Non-standard MPEG-4 codec incompatible with the later standardized version of MPEG-4. This version however can only encode to ASF files, it cannot be used to encode AVI files without hacking.
Also found this about that Codec:
Microsoft MPEG-4 v3
This was technically the first Windows Media codec, and it encoded only to asf files. The Windows Media line has long advanced past this, but the MS MPEG-4 v3 codec lives on as DivX 3 (which is an AVI codec).
Source: http://people.csail.mit.edu/tbuehler/vi ... cs/wm.html

The first would explain why running Vista we do not have that codec "VFW", which is not supported by Vista. You might be able to find some way with DivX..

OK so lets go back to the original question because what I am trying to accomplish is creating H.264/AVC files with user defined dimensions. I would like to create them at 480 x 320 for iPhone specifically but may also want to output them at 1280 x 720 or even 1920 x 1080. Do I just need to get Quicktime Pro to do this or is there a codec plugin I can use to export in these file types directly from VS11+?

I have the awful suspicion you may be the first user -- well certainly the first I have seen on this forum -- who wants to do these various things. So unless someone jumps in an says 'He, I've done that this way', here's your chance to lead the pack and tell us the results of your experiments...

Just remember, none of us here works for Corel/Ulead. We are all just volunteer users sharing our own experience... And that experience is always going to be limited in one way or another...
