Menu edit in Version 8?

Post by woodchuck »

Version 8 of Photo Impact can be purchased on e-bay quite reasonably. Does anyone know if menus can be edited with version 8?

Yes, PI-8 was the first version to support this. However it requires downloading and installing a free PhotoImpact Menu Plug-In.

Now that said, I'm going to caution you on purchasing any software on Ebay. You have no way of knowing if you're buying a legitimate full version, an upgrade version, or pirated version, an SE (Simple or Special Edition) not to mention just a TBYB (trial) version. If you did purchase a say an SE version, which are free, bundled with hardware and are not full featured, or an upgrade, which requires an earlier version serial number or as old as what this version is, to be installed, you would be out of luck. Patches, and the required plug-in will not install to trial, or SE versions.

I know that budgets get tight, mine certainly is, but if you can actually stand to loose the cost amount then go ahead, because that's the risk. PI-8 has long been phased-out and Corel certainly is not going to support it. If it wouldn't affect your budget to take a $20 bill out of your wallet and set fire to it, then you can afford the ebay software....;)

Edited

I looked at the PI-8 for sale on Ebay. There's only 1 available that does not have the SE. Those SE versions are not to be resold. They come bundled with specific hardware, and the manufacturers generally will tweak the software to work with the hardware. SE versions are freebies, so do not buy one that says PhotoImpact 8 SE or whatever version...SE

To add to what Ron has mentioned, not only do SE versions come bundled with hardware such as scanners, digital cameras, camcorders and the like.
Very often you get a "Free" one on the cover CD of a computer magazine.

There are two benefits to SE versions.
1. The are a bit like never ending free trials - only drawback they don't do everything the full version will do. An example of this is the "Free" copy of MovieFactory that is bundled with a Toshiba Notebook computer (also called a laptop!!). I was surprised to find that it did not support the use of JPG images.
Virtually every digital camera takes pictures in JPG format!!

2. They can often be used as the qualifying product for an upgrade to a new version, these are normally a bit cheaper than having to buy the full version.

Thanks, Vidoman for your input regarding purchasing software from e-bay. I was not considering the SE version. I use Paint Shop Pro for photo editing so I would only use PI for editing menus to use with VS12+.

I attempted to download the Menu Plug-In for PI8 at the site supplied by Vidoman, but the site for version 8 seems to be down. Do you know if the plug-in is still available for version 8 and if so where can I get it?

Thanks Ron. I tried it again and I got the same result. When I click on the download button for version 8 I get "Failure to Connect to Web Server". I called my son and asked him to try and he got the same message. If I try to download either of the other versions it works fine. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Try this one - you will need to alter the location where the file is saved to but will be easy enough to work out.

Steve,

Thanks for the link. I took your suggestion and it works great for my purpose. I can now modify existing menu templates. And. . . I might even try creating one from scratch.
