This subject is really totally off-topic but you may wish to read this article on the problems that face the studios. In particular, the resolutions they use to make that DVD you rented from Blockbusters.

Last year just before Christmas a new Boxed Set of the James Bond Films were released - digitally re-mastered. My youngest lad (now 23) is an avid James Bond fan and had to have the set. I was quite pleased because that meant I had his old boxed set!!
Amongst the "extras" on one of the discs they explained how they did the digital re-mastering - same as in that article. It was very interesting.
You can of course do it yourself with MediaStudio and VideoStudio
MediaStudio/VideoStudio: Use A Video Sequence File
and more recently
12: Schindlers The Girl In The Red Coat
However from a practical point we mere mortals wouldn't have that amount of time on our hands. The big film studios though can employ a workforce and split it up into smaller sections then reap the ¢Gmillions from worldwide sales.
