Multiple Clips - 11.5 Plus

Post by CJStyle »

Hi,

I'm working with two clips from two different cameras.

I want to blend several clips from my 2nd camera into my main timeline.

I have my timeline expanded to show the overlay track, what is the best way to seamlessly blend short clips into the main timeline?

My audio will stay with my main timeline.

ALSO - why can't transitions be made onto clips onto the overlay track? I really want a crossfade to go with the clip on the 2nd layer.

Place your clips on the main video track, and place a transition between them. I tend to use only hard cuts or cross-fade transitions.

The overlay tracks in VS do not function the same as video tracks in other NLEs such as MSP. It is possible to use them in a similar fashion. To do so you need to add a color clip at the end of a clip in the main track, and a transition. Then for the overlay track, use the Fade-In/Fade-out buttons (graduated bars) found on the Attribute tab.

That's a feature that we've asked for several versions ago. I think it finally made it into the next version. There are some work-arounds. See the following instructions: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=17972

What about the audio layer? I need to keep the audio that is coming in with the main video so that audio matches people speaking.

I'm only going to cut in about 3 short clips, perhaps 10 seconds each of my 2nd camera I had in the back of the room.

Thank you, I'll try your tutorial you posted when I'm more awake.

So, I'll be placing these short clips on the overlay track...using the fade-in/fade-out buttons? Am I understanding this correctly?

You insert the clips you want to appear in place of the original video in an overlay track at the spot you want the insert to start playing. You will see on the preview screen that the original is there, with a small version of the inserted clip overlaid in the centre of screen. If you right click on it, select 'Fit to screen'. The new clip will then fill the screen. Now when you play back the Project, the new video will appear in place of the original in that spot, but the original audio will continue unchanged.

To fade in and out the new video, you need to follow Vidoman's suggestions in the link he gave. It's quite simple to do as long as you have the Plus version of Video Studio, which gives you multiple overlay tracks.

Otherwise, you are stuck with the fade-in and fade-out buttons for the overlay tracks which in my opinion are a bit slow...

Hi Ken,

Yes, I'm using 11.5 Plus.

I have my timeline expanded, but how do I continue to add multiple tracks?

The overlay track manager icon is just below the little clock at the bottom right of the preview screen. Hover the mouse over the icons there and they are identified. But the overlay track manager icon looks like two tiny film spools with a tick beside them...
