ULead MFDC 4 breaks Windows Media Player..Who else has prob?

Post by JoReneA »

After installing MFDC 4.0 I find that my mpg files are now incorrectly identified in Windows Media Player and are played as 720 x 576 instead of the 720 x 480 that they are. Thus they are distorted. The sound also does not appear, so I assume there is a problem reading the correct sound type. When I uninstall, the problem goes away, so I know it is related to something that ULead installs, either a codec or something else which interacts with Windows Media Player. I doubt anyone can help, but I would like to verifiy that others have the same problem before calling ULead to find a solution.

Thanks!

You are not alone. MF4 is buggy and causes problems with Windows Media Player. It also causes audio sync problems if you use the editor to trim videos. I trimmed the commercials out of a 1 hour TV program and by the end, audio and video were about .5 second out of sync. I do not have these problems with MF3 and I'm very dissapointed in the poor quality exhibited by MF4. I have reported all of the above to ULEAD Tech Support, but I might as well have put a message in a bottle and thrown it in the ocean. We can only hope that a service pack comes soon to fix this mess.

Believe it or not, I got a response to a tech support question on this problem! However, it was a canned response asking me to apply a "fix" that they sent. It did NOTHING to correct the problem and I haven't heard from them again after telling them it did not help. Almost all of my tech support questions have been totally ignored. I like your message in a bottle analogy!

I think I discovered the codec that is causing the problem with the Media Player. It is called ulDVDvideo.ax and it is in the directory ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\Ulead Systems\mpeg. I tried moving first one and then another mpeg or dvd file to my temp directory to see what would happen, and removing this file eliminated the problem of Media Player using the wrong dimensions to play the file. I've still not tried MF to see if it will effect it in any way to have it deleted. Removing the file identified as the mpeg decoder caused problems with media player (it had to go out to find a codec and didn't always find the right one) so I returned that file to the ULead directory. Do you think sending this info to ULead will help in eliminating the problem in future upgrades?

I think that file is also for the Ulead DVD player.

I thought that someone else posted that windows media player uses the
most recent codec installed.
Do you have power dvd or windvd to install and see if Windows Media
player then works correctly? I'll also try doing that when I run windows
again.

It's cool you found this. Mine is corrupted also but I don't use Windows
media player right now except for the HD feature(s).

You're right, it is also used with the DVD Player. When I moved the file from its location to a temp directory, the DVD player no longer worked. Unfortunately, I don't have another DVD player app to install.

I did notify ULead, but whether they do anything about it is another question. Luckily, I also don't use Media Player a lot, but I do use it as the main player of mpeg files. It would be nice if it would work.

No sound in media player

I also find that DVDs created with DMF4 do not have sound on my XP PC, but do have sound when played on a home DVD player. DMF3 worked OK, but then I always used to include the Ulead player.

I thinks its a cheek that the include player option is only supported in the pro verison of dmf4. So much for an upgrade - pay some money, get a buggy product with less features !

Thanks Ulead - as for tech support, if i get that uninstall and reinstall sheet once more I'll scream !

Ulead sent me another suggestion that did nothing to help with the Windows Media Player 10 problem. First, they wanted me to reinstall WMediaPlayer 10...not possible; when you try you just get a message that your current WMP is up to date. I can't even uninstall it as it gives an error message. Then they sent a small program which detects your codecs and gives you the option to select the default codec. All the codecs I had were ULead's and they were all listed as incompatible with Windows Media Player. No matter which I selected, I had the same problem with the mpg files either not playing, playing distorted or with no sound, playing in slow motion, etc. I did find a solution, however.

I installed the Intervideo WinDVD player (trial version). That installed codecs that ARE compatible with WMP and the mpeg files then played correctly in WMP. Even with the DVD player not working due to the 14 day trial having expired, the codec remained active. However, you need to keep Intervideo DVD player installed. Once you uninstall it, it also uninstalls the codecs. But you could probably delete the program files and only leave the common files folder that contains the codec files if you are short of hard disk space.

Another solution is to associate your mpeg files to the Ulead DVD player rather than to the Windows Media Player. Then when you click on them, they open in the DVD player and play correctly...sound, size, etc all correct. ULead really should develop a codec for their software that is compatible with the Windows Player, but until then, either of these solutions work.

http://www.radlight.org/products/filter ... /index.php

download the filter manager, open the DirectShow Filters tree (the +), scroll all the way down to ulead DVD video decoder 2, select it and click on the unregister button.

this will stop the awful ulead DS filter from running your mpeg2/dvd's in wmp and it should all work as before :)

to make sure it is, open your mpeg2 video in wmp10, make sure its in "skin mode". then right click on the video, go down to properties. in the window, the video codec should say something else but "ulead DVD video decoder 2"....

How do you run this program (the filter manager)? The zip file has no executable or setup file.

Thank you.
