Video Studio 8 - No sound with imported DVD content

Trying to import a home produced DVD (created on a VHS to DVD deck) into VidStud8 to edit content. Video imports fine but no sound. Have tried looking at a range of possibilities but have not come up with any answers.

The DVD itself plays fine on everything I have tried it on (several different DVD players, and PCs) so I don't imagine it is anything to do with the disc. The disc contains two folders one called VIDEO_RM and the other VIDEO_TS. The former contains .dat, .bup, and .ifo files whilst the latter contains .bup, .vob, and .ifo files. The .vob file must be the video itself due to its large size, and with the exception of the .dat file (which is just over 1MB in size) all the other files are tiny.

When selecting DVD input from with VidStud8 have just selected the disc and not the files on it. Vid Stud then displays thumbnails of the videos from which to select.

This is the first time I have tried video editing with any package so it maybe something stupid I have overlooked - any help would be gratefully accepted.

I suspect your DVD deck is set up to use Dolby audio for the recordings. Unfortunately, Video Studio 8 did not come with a native ability to process Dolby. It was in fact the first version of Video Studio that allowed it, but you had to buy a special Dolby plug-in for something like US$20, if I recall correctly -- might even have been $29.95... And of course, that plug-in is no longer available. Dolby was included from VS9 up as part of the standard package...

So the only thing I can think to suggest is that you check to see if you can alter the settings of your DVD deck to use a different audio format (e.g. [L]PCM or mpeg layer 2) if you continue to use Video Studio 8. Either that, or acquire a more recent version of Video Studio. We are currently at VS11/11+/11.5+.

This is not the codec mentioned by Ken.

This will allow you to hear the digital dolby sound, but not recode to Digital Dolby
At least it gets you half way.

Not sure if this will work, its been a long time since VS 8
Change your project properties to match your video properties, you can only select Mpeg 2 or LPMC for audio.
Render the project to same as project properties. Try a short section.
Does it play audio now?

Thanks guys - your suspicions about Dolby encoding on the DVD disc seem to be correct. I just tried inporting the same files into a different editor that I have (Cyberlink DVD Director) which immediately came up with a message that I was trying to import a dolby encoded video and asked whether I wished to upgrade.

Looks like either an upgrade then, or setting up the VHS to DVD deck to record without using dolby as you suggest. However also tried to import using an add-on to Nero 7 called Nero Vision 4 which accepted it and with the audio intact. Looks like it will also save to DV format also so maybe this is the fix I need. Once saved to hard drive assume I might be able to edit in VideoStudio !!

I don't think so if you are talking about the files imported via Nero if they still have the Dolby audio. However, if you import as DV, yes, then certainly you could edit them in Nero since DV does not use Dolby audio.
