VS 11+ & the Diamond One Touch Video Capture Device....

...apparently do NOT play nice with each other.
I received and installed the device drivers and software for the Diamond device this past Saturday. I DID NOT install the included bundled software if Videostudio 8 SE for obvious reasons.
Upon completing installation, I captured a 90 minute VHS tape and saved it as an .avi file with no problem whatsoever. I was elated to say the least.
Then the roof caved in.......
Upon opening VS 11+ to edit and author the avi file, I was given an error, mentioned in another thread, about "Ordinal 17" and an mpgvout.dll file. I searched the corresponding folder and saw that, in fact, the mpgvout.dll file WAS indeed there. After reading a few threads here, I decided to simply uninstall the Diamond device. After that, Videostudio opened just fine, and I was able to edit, author, and burn to DVD sucessfully. After that, I shut down my laptop.
Then, this morning when I powered up my laptop at work, I immediately knew something wasn't right. The Windows XP splash screen at bootup took forever to appear, and when it did, it ran for a good two minutes before arriving at the desktop. Once the desktop appeared it looked to be that grainy, 8 bit color and HUGE resolution. Then came the errors: 3 of which were related to my nvidia card, and one related (after researching) to my DSL ISP (AT&T). All were .dll errors.
To make a real long story short, I was on the phone with Dell for almost two hours, and had to do a system restore and chkdisk (which lasted about 45 minutes. My laptop seems back to normal now, but I can't open Videostudio- it gives an internal error. I uninstalled it and will reinstall as soon as I get home to my disks.
Just wanted to share my nightmare. Anyone have any ideas why this happened?

It could very well be that they don't like each other, that's probably why they included a v8 SE. Usually when an SE version is included with hardware it is best to use that software for capturing, as it probably has been "tweaked" by the hardware manufacturer to work with it.
So I would install both the v8 SE and v11, using v8 to capture and v11 for your editing and output.
But before you install please read the following about a clean uninstall/reinstall (of course replacing the references to v9 with the correct version):
1. Launch Windows Explorer and go to "Tools > Folder Options > View" to check "show hidden files and folders".
2. Purge/delete all the files in these folders: "C:\Windows\Temp" "C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Local Settings\Temp" (for WinXP) *It is safe to delete all contents of these folders. However, leave any files you can?t delete for now.
3. Delete these folders/directories: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems" "C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0" "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio\9.0" "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SmartSound Software Inc" (for full versions)
4. Go to "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information"
5. Delete the folder "{88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE}"
6. Go to Start-->Run
7. Type "regedit" then "Ok".
8. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Uninstall
9. Locate and delete the identity enclosed in curly brackets that corresponds to Ulead VideoStudio 9: "{88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE}"
10. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio"
11. Delete the folder "9.0"
12. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio"
13. Delete the folder "9.0"
14. Close Regedit and restart Windows.
15. Reinstall Ulead VideoStudio 9. Be sure to logon as Administrator before installing your software to avoid restrictions.
16. Download and install the VideoStudio 9 Update Pack:

I appreciate the quick response Black Lab, but do suggest that I put two different versions of VS on my laptop? Can that be done without causing problems?

Shouldn't cause a problem. At one time or another I have had 3 different versions installed at one time (to assist on this forum).
Just keep in mind that you can only run one at a time.

6. Go to Start-->Run; (on Windows XP) or Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Run (on Windows Vista)
7. Type "regedit" then "OK";
8. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Uninstall;
9. Locate and delete the identity enclosed in curly brackets that corresponds to Ulead VideoStudio 11: {F99F9E24-EE2F-47FD-AEB0-FDB82859B5C9}
10. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio";
11. Delete the folder "11.0";
12. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio";
13. Delete the folder "11.0";
14. Close Regedit and restart Windows;
15. Reinstall Ulead VideoStudio 11.

True.
There were some things missing from my registry. Like Step 9- Step 5 had the bracket number, but not step 9.
Steps 10 & 12- neither had 11.0. Step 10 didn't even have the "Ulead VideoStudio" folder in the Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio path. It does contain two other folders named "ULead Color Picker" and "ULead Import DVD".
Step 13- no 11.0 to be found, but rather a 10.0 folder.
Any ideas?

It's quite alright- I appreciate your input and effort, believe me. I did what I could following your steps, then reinstalled- everything looks good on my laptop, where I'm running v.11.5.
I installed the v.10SE (it's 10, not v.8 like I think I put in a previous post)that came with the One Touch capture device on my desktop, and they work well together.
I guess I'll just have to capture at home on my desktop, and edit and author on my laptop- a little inconvenience, but nothing too major.
