Trying to save completed project in useable format

Post by anydm »

I am new to the use of video editing software, and have only limited IT knowledge however the following describes my problem: I am currently working to edit the video of my daughters wedding and having done all the ¡¥hard work¡¦ (ie cutting, inserting, titling etc) am having difficulty in outputting the finished project into a useable format on DVD disk. All the clips with the exception of the software-generated content were produced on a Sony HDD camera. The clips imported into the time-line have the following properties:
Video format: PAL DVD, MPEG2 Upper Field First, 24 Bits, 25 F/S, Variable Bit Rate (Max 9100kbps).
Audio: Dolby Digital Audio, 48kHz, Layer None, 256kbps.
The total running time of the completed project is 95 minutes and when I first attempted to burn a disk via the share option (using DVD+R dual layer media because the file size was showing as over 6GB) the software sat there for just over two and a half hours going through the process until at 99% complete it crashed. Unfortunately I am unable to describe the error that was reported but the disk now appears to have nothing written to it but no available free space. I then attempted to save the file into MPEG2 format, which seemed to take place in ¡¥real time¡¦ insofar as the edited file was playing whilst the file was being created - hence the time taken was approx one and a half hours. When I now try to play this file the video will play on the PC in Windows media player but with no sound. The MPEG2 file size is stated to be 4.72GB although it still won¡¦t write to a single layer DVD (pointless anyway with no sound!). I did get an error message saying that WMP might not support the CODEC that was used to compress the file but that¡¦s where my knowledge of IT evaporates. I should point out that I am only using the downloaded trial version of VideoStudio 11 at the moment, which I will willingly buy providing I can get these compatibility issues ironed out. In other words I don¡¦t want to purchase the software if I am not going to get a long-term benefit from it. Are there restrictions to what you can actually save with the trial version?

The trial version should work in saving a usable DVD.

Personally I never burn my DVD straight from VS. I think it's best to make a mpeg2 file first as you did afterwards. Dual layer is tricky to burn. Most likely it will not work.

I guess your files size of 4.7 Gb is to big. It should be 4.3 Gb or less to fit on a single disc. To get the best quality you could spread the mpeg over 2 discs thus maintaining a hight bit rate for best quality.

When you play your final mpeg file in VS does it have sound?

Hi

You need to re-code / render the project using 6000 bit rate.
This should produce a file under 4.3 Gb and fit to disc.

The audio problem may be due to Digital Dolby, as far as I know it is not supported using the trial version.

Use Tools--Make Movie Manager to create a new template
Select New then Mpeg format¡Xgive it a name.
Compression tab to Pal-DVD

Now change the other settings to:-

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 6000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo (NOT Digital Dolby)

Render your project to a new video file.

The template will show in Share Create Video File at the bottom of the list.
Will take some time.
Use the new video file to burn a DVD.
Start a new project Share Create Disc---Add Video using your new file.

Thank you for such a speedy response.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but am unsure how to play the final MPEG2 file in VS. I have saved the file to my hard drive and when I double click on the icon, the editing software opens up OK but the file does not appear.

Oh

Ok I thought you had edited the original video.

When you open Video Studio you are opening a project, File--'save as' and give it a name. this is a VSP a video studio project.

You import video files to the timeline or library

Library, click the ¡¥open folder¡¦ icon, browse the hard drive for your Mpeg.
This should load to the library.
Drag the file from the library to the timeline.

Use the controls under the preview screen to play in ¡¥clip or project¡¦ mode

Is your footage 16:9 or 3:4 format?

First off all, thanks guys for being so helpful. To answer some of the questions: The format is set at 16:9 - should this be a problem? Secondly in answer to Trevor, yes I had already done the editing (in VideoStudio 11) and having failed to burn a disk I tried saving a file of the finished project in MPEG2 (took about 90 mins - the actual running time of the project). The video AND sound of the rendered MPEG2 file will play in the editing software but only the video will play in Media Player. I will try carrying out trevors instructions and re-rendering the file later on when I have a bit more time but, even if I can compress the file enough to get it onto a single layer disk I will still need to sort out the loss of audio. Thanks again

Ok. But do not save it as 3:4 . Seems like MEdia Player is missing a codec or something. You video-file should be fine and play well on your dvd set.

Good luck.

Have just realised that there is a further complication!! I have used some footage from a second camera whose format was set at 3:4. So I in fact have some footage in each aspect ratio. What must I first do to get it all back into the same ratio?

Hi

Select the 4:3 clip in the timeline
You need to use the ¡¥distort¡¦ function under the Attributes tab.

Once selected the video clip can be stretched, Right click the preview screen and select ¡¥fit to screen¡¦
Right click again and select ¡¥keep aspect ratio¡¦

You will lose some detail top and bottom

See my guide 16:9 A look at widescreen from the link below

Hope this helps

For some reason my trial version access has ended 9 days early so I will now have to wait until Mr Amazon has done his stuff!! At least it gives me time to absorb the excellent tips provided in Trevors guide and also the user manual that I downloaded.

I did get as far as reformatting the 3:4 clips and creating the new compression template so it should now just be a case of re-rendering the file and burning the DVD. - Fingers crossed. Thanks again!

Hi, I have a finished project ready to be burned to a standard dvd-R disc. The video file is in mpg format.

I've tried burning my file to a disc twice. Once with my project setting to NTSC dvd, and then Pal dvd.

The first time it burned to the disc, but didn't play on my dvd player. I put the disc back into my computer and the it had those Video and audio Ts folders in it, and did not play like a normal dvd. The second time, I chose the Pal dvd compression setting and put my clips onto the timeline, went to the Share tab and Create disc. I created my disc menus, and started the burn process, but when it gets to 99%, it says that it can't write it to disc or something.

So can someone please explain to me how I can burn my mpg files to a dvd disc in standard quality? I just want to be able to watch my videos on my dvd player. I don't know what project setting to use. I've never burned my video files to disc before, so any info you could give me, such as basic knowledge on file formats, and dvd authoring will be appreciated. I was looking for a tutorial on dvd burning with VS, but couldn't find one, so I posted here. (hope that's ok)
Thanks for the help!

Geoff.VSP,

Please do not double post. It may cause confusion when members try to respond to your questions. I have provided a reply in your other post:

I am now beginning to despair that I will never get this video to disk! Having purchased to pukka version of the software (VS11.5) I first of all had to uninstall the trial version before I could even get the software to load. I then tried to carry out Trevors instructions to create a new movie manager template, but after carrying out the instructions the new template just will not save and I cant therefore access it from the share, create video file option. I cant even edit the pre-loaded templates and get the changes to save. I tried saving the movie as a file using the standard DVDPAL (9:16) template) but this still wont write to disk even though the file properties are said to be less than 4GB. (More when examined in the burn module). Can you please help me further???

Hi

Have you installed all VS 11 necessary updates
I do not have VS 11 and cannot comment on which are appropriate, sorry.

OK
I have heard of the template problem in the past.
I think it¡¦s a ¡¥Indeo¡¦ Driver problem. Not a problem with the driver, Just the lack of it.

Run the installation disc.
If you see an option for ¡¥Read Me¡¦ its worth a look.

There should also be an option for Install Utilities.
Install Intel Indeo Driver.

Burning a DVD.

If you successfully rendered your project to a new mpeg 2 file using Share Create Video File
The file is under 4.3 Gb and saved to the hard drive.

Start a new project
Share Create Disc
Add Video
Add your new mpeg 2 file.

Select the Thumbnail type menu template.
Navigate to the last burner window.

Do you get that far

If not why not, what error messages if any.
