Hi all,

Have a (nother) little problem hoping someone out there - the usual suspects please feel free to reply too! - may know the answers.

Have a sony ericson k800i mobile phone - on it along with pics have some video...now the pics can be brought into VS10+ no problem...its the short videos i made i seem to have a problem with.

The quality - for once - is not the issue..they are important video clips to me regardless...I can play them/upload them onto my computer via Quicktime...they play ok.

When i try to import them into VS..all i get is..." the file......is of invalid file format."

Any advice happy taken thanks

... ummm... and we are supposed to guess what (unspecified) format your phone uses?

My problem is that I have done a Google search for the phone, but none of the reviews mentions exactly which format it uses for video. Since it is a 3G phone, I am assuming it uses the .3gp format... That is a variant of mpeg-4 but I suspect you will need the H.263 codec on your computer, and that is not there automatically from any other program. Did the phone come with an installation CD?

Hi

What version of Video Studio are you using.

I assumed it was VS 9 can you confirm this?

Have you installed the relevant updates to VS 9

This you should have UVS9Full_Patch1_5in1.exe

Once installed VS loads with a white background screen rather than a red one, you know the window with the lady.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is also an update pack for Mpeg 4 called:-
Ulead VideoStudio 9 MPEG4 iPod Update Pack (Release Date: 2005/12/23 )

This may help your phone problem????

If you don¡¦t have these go to:-

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 7911963266

select Video Studio 9
Download and save the PDF.
The PDF has links to the update patches.

Hope this Helps.

Why in life is nothing straightforward!

Thanks for the replies.

I have VS10 plus - for my sins..is this mysterious codec thang part of that?

The mobile video clips play on windows player and quickplayer no problem but whenever i try to import them or capture them into VS - it does like it! and that invalid format message comes up.

Yes, thanks for looking, they do seem to be in a 3gp format...can i change/alter this in any way? so VS will recogise it.

Went onto the website you suggested, being 10plus clicked on that and saved...comes up with a zip file...so what do i do with this then?...file it somewhere? use it somehow?

Hi

Sorry for the confusion re VS version, I now realise you have VS 10

The Zip file, right click and select ¡¥extract here¡¦, this should extract a Pdf file to that folder.

Open the file, there are several updates available.
Do not think this will sort the codec problem.

Please reply to Ken regarding his earlier post re phone installation CD¡K¡K¡K¡K

How large are the phone video files, if small e-mail me a sample.
I will try to open in VS 10

Looking at the formats which VS10 (and 11) can accept for editing, I don't see .3gp among them. So I suspect that you are going to have to convert the files first. Fortunately, there are a variety of free programs out there designed to do just that. Do a Google search for '.3gp converter free' and you will get a ton of hits. Some appear to convert to raw AVI, but some seem also to convert to mpeg-4. One such program I found is at http://www.brothersoft.com/free-3gp-vid ... 59283.html

Make sure you have your anti-virus on when you are downloading any of these programs as sometimes they can harbour nasty surprises...

The manual for the k800i phone is here
http://www.sonyericsson.com/downloads/K ... R1a_EN.pdf
However it does not mention the video format - no specifications in the manual.

Found the specifications here:
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_k800-1485.php
Video shown as QCIF Format.

QCIF format described here:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/Q/QCIF.htm

I happen to have that particular phone - more of a camera than a phone takes excellent stills, haven't used it for video though. I would suggest you try converting the captured video with Super

Thank you both for looking into all that.

So need to convert the thing then.

Downloaded Super - impressive looking program...Havent a clue where to start! Once more up a blind alley!!

So..the files this 3g thang...output needs to be 4mpeg....so i.....? Place file want to 'encode'...and..the program 'does stuff'..and yet im left with...nowt?...will VS recognise this ....? does it recognise mpeg4 should i get this super thang to work?

Hi

Thanks for the sample video.

At first I was unable to open this file with Video Studio, but was able to re-code it using a program called ¡¥Super¡¦
Recommended and used by many on the forum.

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Don¡¦t know which options will produce the best quality, given the quality of the original.

I tried Avi-Mpeg-4 option then Mpeg 2 both worked fine.

I can now open in VS 10

The re-code option really depends on what you intend to do with the final video, are you intending to burn a DVD?

Just read the last few posts.

Super

Right click the lower panel, select ¡¥Out put file saving manager¡¦, to find the saving folder or allocate to existing by selecting top option. (save each file output in respective source files folder.

Thank you once again for your reply and email - which check those sites.

Regarding Super - and promise this is the last im messaging about the subject..if this doesnt work giving up on my mobile video - quality worse than i thought anyway!

Couldnt quite make out what you were saying regarding Super....managed to actaully bring into VS10 a mpeg4..BUT, just as its about to actually load - on the timeline - VS encounters a problem and closes on me...time after time....so obviously it doesnt like it!

Now, before i ask you once again to go through exactly what i need to convert this video file....say i manage it via mpeg II ( same as 2? just noticed on Super doesnt actually say 2 ) or mpeg4..Can i combine this with the normal capturing of camcorder footage..ie, add to my existing project taken the normal route - miniidv.....or will VS not like the combination at all?

Again, quality isnt so much an issue here...so please could you tell me...once i right click onto Save into file - as you mentioned before - got that part..brought in the mobile clip i want to do...one of many....at the top of Super clicked mpeg4 in Select output container...then mpeg4 in output video codec?..then audio codec...took a guessAAC LC????

Then run it, autmatically saves..bring it into VS and heypresto??

I am not at one of my own machines right now so cannot look at Super to provide any suggested settings. However what you need to do is use Super to convert it to a format suitable for your intended final destination.

VideoDVD - MPEG2
Internet use - MPEG4

Regarding quality issues and mixing.
Firstly yes you can mix the video in with other material from other sources.
Next - quality. If you find that enlarging the video to fit the TV screen distorts the video then the easy method is to keep it fairly small - but large enough to watch - placing it on an overlay track and using a picture in picture or a split screen effect.
