I like to trim all my videos and have the clips reside in the Project Tray, Media Bin, Videos. I then create nested timelines and use them there.
So how do I get the proxy files in to that section first, rather then the timeline?
Also how do I know that I'm actually working with the proxy files and not the original? When I check the Properties for the file in MSP it always points to the original.

I tried importing the original source file in to the timeline and letting the proxy conversion auto run. The original files are on an external drive and the proxy files are on the local drive.
If I save and close the project, disconnect the external drive with the original files, and then try to reopen the project, MSP can't find the files.
I thought the whole purpose of proxy files was to conserve CPU power and memory resources as well as being able to take your project on the road without the need for huge source files.
What am I doing wrong?

Yep I know where the proxy files are. I tried inserting them in the media bin and the timeline.
Then without the external drive connected with the original avi's on it, I went to File, Create Video File, and selected:
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit
It never prompts for the original file, so how can it render from these settings:
MPEG files
24 bits, 352 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 6000 kbps
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
to the higher original file settings shown above? It appears that it thinks the proxy files are the originals.
