can anyone recommend a video capture card or device for both my laptop and pc that will be suitable to capture using video studio 9 also i would like to convert some VHS footage to use on studio 9 also anybody got any advice on which products to aquire (my vhs player has yellow and white output sockets) - is cabling a problem,?

I have a number of Hauppauge TV devices, to capture VHS you need a TV Card that fits into the motherboard so that rules out using it with a notebook/laptop computer. Other than VHS you can use a USB dongle TV Device - works great with the laptop as well as a desktop and you can record TV as it is broadcast.

The way I do things is to record onto the desktop computer. If I want to use the notebook computer for editing I transfer the captured video to an external USB Hard Drive which will plug into any of my computers.

You can try Hauppauge. I have a Hauppauge PCI analog capture card, and it works pretty well. My only complaint is that it's MPEG only, and MPEG can be "difficult" to edit. But digital TV broadcasts are MPEG, and most good digital TV capture devices are going to capture the native MPEG stream anyway...

The ATI All-In-Wonder cards have been very popular for a long time, and ATI/AMD also makes at least one USB capture device.

Beware of "cheap" capture devices. Real-time video capture can be tricky, and low-quality hardware can make it trickier.

to use on studio 9

In general, you should use the capture-software that came with your capture device. Once you have a digital video file on your hard drive, you can use Video Studio or any other video editing or DVD authoring software of your choice. (I don't remember if VS9 can handle high-definition files... I think so, but I'm not 100% sure it can handle high-definition TV digital capture.

I've always used Leadtek products without issue. I'm currently using a Leadtek PxPVR2200, this also has hardware capture to free up the CPU.
