Kind Sirs ( assuming only the male variety would have the know-all to reply )
My poser....keeping it brief and to the point.
Played around a fair bit, creating a few decent looking dvds for myself/family. Overall happy with the results..so..if it aint broke why fix it you say...well...was just wondering..could - with a simple press of a button here or there - make what i do a little easier...
I edit my movies via the Mulit-trim feature..always have..dont understand the scissors thang...tried it once - didnt like it!..So, once i bring in my..say..15minutes captured clip...place onto video line..and then multi-trim it...and edit it via that way...so have 6 or 7 or more chunks..when are then placed back onto the video line..which i then blend together with effects.
So, easy enough, and it works..occassionally having to extend or shorten a little chunk..no problem....SO, what i want to know is..whats the downside to me doing this? Use scissors? how and where and when?
I ask, simply because ive noticed..only on a couple of occassions, when i chose to 'Create disk' ( yes i know i dont save it as video project first - agai, tried it once didnt like it..perfer the longer method! )..aside from that....so, when i create disk, a few times..when adding chapter points..my edited video messes up...titles, music appear..totally at wrong points..and more worringly...scenes which i edited out ( via my multi edit method ) appear again..and burning this project..im left with..a duration of...say 40minutes ( which it should be ) but with clips totally out of context and bits which i didnt want?...
..Yet, close project down, try again..create disk..and hey-presto...works..the 40min projects looks like it should look..hit n miss kinda thing it seems.
So - please inform me..educate me...why would it do this? Because multi trim isnt actually cutting it at all? need scissors to really lose top n tail of a clip?
Again, the way i do it im happy with..it works 9 times outta 10 for me..BUT, if for the sake of a couple of buttons...i could do it the proper way..please let me know.
Thanking you.

Hi
You¡¦ve heard this before, Creating a dvd from timeline content/project can cause problems.
I personally feel that creating a video file first is the best option.
But your not gonna do that are you?
Oh by the way its not a longer method, just takes two steps, but takes the same time.
Multi trim
Is no different to using the scissors, the resultant video file is cut into sections removing the bits you don¡¦t want, and that¡¦s it.
Using the scissors you cut and delete in the timeline, the multi trim you set the mark-in / out points (F3-F4)
The bits you don¡¦t select are the same bits you delete using the scissors option.
Authoring
If you create your menu structure, then return to the project and further edit the project it will seriously mess up the chapter points.
I don¡¦t use chapter points, not often. Usually I create a separate video file for each section. This is added as a video creating a title for each.
The first menu page shows all my thumbnails/links.
If you create chapters you create additional menu pages, the first having the one link.
I don¡¦t know what went wrong with your authoring, but check that you have the latest DirectX version, visit the ditectx web site
Good luck

In addition to Trevor's comments, neither multi-trim nor the scissors will alone create new files. The cuts made are purely virtual. The original video remains uncut, and though you think you have new, smaller files in the timeline, the missing bits are only removed insofar as the project file is concerned. To create actual, new files, you have to use the scissors or multi-trim, then highlight each part, then use Clip > Save Trimmed Video. This will actually create new, real clips of the trimmed video. The original will remain uncut, but you will have new, real clips. You have to then empty out the timeline of the virtual clips, and substitute the new, real ones by dragging them new clips from the library pane into the timeline.
This is also one of the reasons why I like to split all my videos by scene on capture. Real clips are created of each scene. If you then trim these and Save Trimmed Video, then you know you are always dealing with real files.
The problem with the way you are doing things is that you have a succession of virtual, edited clips in the timeline. Then instead of first converting all this virtual stew into a real new file (Share > Create Video File > DVD), you further complicate things by simply jumping to the burning module. That merely inserts the project file, full of variously cut and edited virtual clips, into the burning timeline. And the computer has to sort it all out. It works for some, but lots of people find it is just an ask too far of their computer. So welcome to that club.
Like Trevor, all I can do is suggest you think seriously about editing, creating a new file, then, and only then, opening the burning module. And then insert your new file or files... Your computer, and Video Studio, will thank you!!

Hi lakewud
Just another thought on the chapter problem you experienced.
Do you use the chapter point bar at the top of the timelines to insert your chapters prior to Share Create Disc? They show as an orange triangle.
If you have inserted chapter points by mistake, and this is very easy to do, they will mess up the chapters created in the Share Create Disc stage. Removing chapter points in the burner module will clear them from the timeline as well.
You can access the chapter points by viewing Tools-Chapter Point Bar.

Thanking you all for the replies..they have inspired me to erase my current version of VS11 and re-installed...my previous captured files all over the place - best start again.
Can i please ask..any kind soul out there to explain ( and Yes! i realise this has been asked and answered before..had i understood it back then im certain id now be editing via scissors and capturing properly...
Time is short nowadays, with a child in the mix. i really do need a one step at a time approach..you press this and do that etc..
Firstly, capture. I have 3 hours worth...all over the place.
Do I plug in camcorder, and let it run and run for the entire 45min/a tape...automatically capturing into - whatever the auto process is..straight onto the Video thumbnails i guess.
Capture mode - TYPE 2? OR 1? auto seems to be Type 1?
So, must i ideally create a new file, call it, Samanthadvd - the early years - for example and capture into that??
From there do i then mutli edit this 45min chuck of film...seperating into sections/edits? use scissors at this point and then transitions?
Seeing as im prepared to start all over - can someone please inform me the correct way to begin a new project.
Thanks for any replys. Sorry to be a pain..wont even go into the whole Create disc thang at this stage - just last time i saved my project file before burning it really made the quality terrible.
Ignore that, please answer my capture probs.
Thanks again

Lakewud, have you ever had a look at these tutorials?:
From Camcorder to DVD
From Camcorder to DVD - Editing Phase
You want step-by-step? They are step-by-step.
To answer your question directly, when I start a new project I make a new folder for that project on my hard drive. That is my working folder. Everything related to my project, video clips, audio, images, etc. go into this folder. Then, not only is everything in one place so I can find it, but also everything is in one place when I want to delete it.
In VS I go to the Library Manager and make custom libraries for this project. Again, video/audio/images, whatever I am using.
I, and most people on this forum, capture Type 1. Type 2 gives you a separate audio stream (that VS can't use anyway, I think) and is more demanding on your pc.
How you capture and edit is personal preference. I do mostly sports highlights. I prefer to go thru the tape and capture only the clips I want. I could capture the entire tape and go back and cut out what I don't want, but the other way seems more efficient to me. I am also a fan of the scissors for editing, rather than multi-trim.
And to answer this question:
can someone please inform me the correct way to begin a new project.
There is no "correct" way to begin a project. I'm sure most of us have many variations of how we start, edit, and finish a project. The important thing is we start, edit, and finish a project. By trial and error you will discover a workflow that works for
you.
Now stop reading this and get back to work (editing) or soon it will be Samantha - the teenage years! (It will be here sooner than you think.

Hi Lakewud
I fully agree with Jeff¡¦s workflow, it just seems normal to do it that way.
Video Studio in a way shows us what to do first, the tabs at the top of the screen are not just thrown there, they are in order.
Capture first, then work through left to right
Edit ¡V this is where you remove or adds your video frames (Multi trim)
Effects ¡V add transitions
Overlay-Titles and Audio can be added
To finish we Share
Do it in order be methodical.
The hard bit I found was understanding the video properties, converting the project.
Now I have a reasonable knowledge of the process, but it was hard to start with.
If you have found that your files are all over the place, then as Jeff said you should create a separate working folder for each project/capture. Its just good housekeeping.
By the way, where do you live? US, AU, Europe
It helps knowing what video properties you should be using.

Hi
And I too am confused
From the beginning------------ you are capturing via firewire to DV format this produces a DV-Avi file.
See my quick guide for DV-Avi from the link below
You should create a Capture Folder / Working folder for each project.

Sorry for any confusion - all i meant was, wanting to capture video into a file...so need to go to File>New>call it something> then press Capture button? and the footage automatically goes in there.
Automatically it saves to library anyway ( looked at those tutorials ).
Yes firewire avi etc - the normal setup.
Just wanting to know how you go about getting your footage into a specific folder/file instead of it all appearing in thumbnails on the Edit screen of VS.

Hi lakewud
I assume you are using Video Studio 9.
Video Studio provides us with a ¡¥working folder¡¦ allowing us to save our captured files.
This folder can be selected from File-Preferences¡XGeneral tab¡XWorking Folder
Pressing the square icon to the right opens a Browse for Folder window, you can now allocate or create a new folder.
I would advise that you create a new working folder for each project.
Capture Folder, this is the same folder as the ¡¥working folder¡¦It can be accessed from the Capture window selecting the Capture Folder icon
Now you can allocate the folder as above.
Remember the capture folder and working folder are the same.
Connect your Camera via firewire and select DV from the ¡¥Format¡¦ box
Selecting the ¡¥Options¡¦ tab allows you to select DV-Type 1 (please use type 1)
You can also choose to capture to library or not.
The capture properties can be viewed in the information panel below the preview screen.
Nothing else to set, you are capturing digital video DV-Avi. (13Gb per hour)
Pressing the ¡¥capture video¡¦ will start camera and capture.
Pressing ¡¥stop capture¡¦ will end capture.
The camera will stop
The captured files will be saved to the ¡¥Capture Folder¡¦
A copy/thumbnail will be placed in the timeline, this always happens.
After all the next step is to edit the captured video clips and that¡¦s where you do it.
The project should be saved using File--Save As¡Xgiving the project a name.
Save the project to the working folder. The folder you created earlier.
Captured files are always represented by a clip, a thumbnail placed in the timeline.
This is your project.
If you do not want this, and I see no reason why not, then don¡¦t save the project.
