Have created a project using avi video and still images from Canon Ixus
Want to create a video file and then create disc. I know avi is lower field first and still images can be either. so they all work together. Need to convert to DVD compatible for SD tv. What options do I choose for this?
DVD... Pal ...mpeg upper field first.
In a different project I have done the process using HD and mpeg and ensured I had upper field first as project settings. that was great. However
I have not used avi with stills until now and I am unsure how to get it to DVD compatible for designing menus and burning.

Your field order should be the same as your source clips from start (project properties) to finish (output settings).

I would use Tools-Make Movie Manager to create a template.

First set the Compression tab to Media type PAL-DVD

Any further settings will be compatible for DVD

As Jeff said keep your ¡¥field order¡¦ as origin.

I use :-

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First ( check this field order is correct for your source video file)
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: 6000 kbps (constant)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Unless things have changed drastically at Canon, the Ixus uses the MJPEG codec for its video files. And MJPEGs are Motion JPEGs i.e. video made up of entire, successive frames. It is not interlaced, as far as I know i.e. it is frame based, the same as photos. If you are mixing the video with a slideshow, then you can set the whole thing to be Frame Based. Or you can make the whole thing Upper or Lower Field First.

Like Trevor, I would personally use Lower Field First. Depending on how much end video you are wanting to fit on a single layer DVD, then if it is an hour or less, I would probably also use a higher bitrate (8000 kbps) since MJPEG is usually of pretty good quality (it was the predecessor of DV/AVI). But the 6000 kbps will still give you good quality, and allow about 90 minutes on a single layer DVD.
