Several Problems in Version 11 plus

I am new to Ulead having come over from Pinnacle. I have had several problems that I cannot seem to solve. I have created a project in VideoStudio yet when I try to insert that project file into the wizrd to make a movie I get the following error:

File Format Mismatch

When I try to batch covert this file I get the same error. Ihave been able to use small clips I have made but the one that will not work has several clips along with titles and transitions. Yet, in the editor it plays just fine. I get the same errors when I try to run the vsp files through MoveiMaker version 6 Plus. i was able to get get a vsp file into MovieMaker by saving as a version ten file but there were a few problems with that.

Lastly, I was able to burn a DVD with another project using one of the design templates. When the DVD runs it plays just fine. However, when it completes its run instead of going back to the main menu the video file starts again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running XP with 2 gigs of memory.

Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, we are going to need a little more information. Please read the sticky announcement at the top of this web page, which is headed 'Please Read This Before Posting!!!' Then get back to us and someone should be able to help.

In particularly, we need to know exactly where the video you used in the project came from and what its properties are. You can find this information by right clicking on the files in either the Video Studio timeline or in the library window. Copy all the Properties here, please.

You also need to tell us each step you took while editing, and which Wizard you are talking about.

You also need to know that a Video Studio Project (.vsp) file is NOT a video file. It is only a small text file which tells Video Studio what video files are included in a project, where they are located, what editing has been done to them etc. They can only be opened by Video Studio (and Ulead Movie Factory) so I am very surprised when you say you managed to open one such file in Windows Movie Maker! I suspect what you mean when you say you saved it as 'a version ten file' was that you actually saved it as (probably) a DV/AVI file which Movie Maker will certainly accept.

As for getting a DVD to return to the menu instead of playing the video again, then in the burning module, you click on the middle of the three icons down in the bottom left of the burning screen. In the new window which appears, down at the bottom, un-tick the box 'Auto-repeat when disc playback ends. Then you will see the little window immediately below that becomes active, and your can choose 'Return to Menu'.

VS will not allow inserting a VSP into the Movie Wizard that is already open in the Editor. You need to start a new project, then go to the Movie Wizard and insert the VSP.

Thanks for the reply. Let me attempt to clarify. I created a project consisting of several AVI files along with several transitions and title pages. This file opens up every time in Videostudio. I can preview the entire project. I then save this file. Next I go to open MoveMaker version Six Plus to work on this given project. I get the following message every time: Unable to read the file, Unable to open the file. I go into MovieMaker , start a new project and when prompted for a video file select the project I just created in VideoStudio. I am assuming I am using the products correctly. That is I do all the editing in the edit mode of VS, the to finalize and make the movie use either the wizard within VS or use MovieMaker 6 PLus.

Now back to VideoStudio. After creating and saving this project, I run the Move Wizard under TOOLS and try to load in the project I just created. This is the message I get: Unable to open file...file format mismatch...[16803:1:2]. I did unload the project file before trying to run it through the Videostudio movie maker wizard.

You mentioned indicating properties here. I need to ask which properties? There are properties for every segment of the project. i.e avi files, images, colors, transitions etc. Here is the data from the properties of the avi file which is the major component of the project.

Microsoft AVI
56175 K
25.00 frames/sec
315.00 seconds
177.13kbps

Video
Xvid MPEG -4 codec
24 bits 352x288
7,875 frames

Audio
MPEG Layer 3
192 kbits/sec 44,100 hrz stereo
13,891,092 samples

What other information can I provide to troubleshoot this?

I am running XP SPII with 2 gigs of memory installed. Many thanks,

Steve

I did note the following tonight. When I attempt to open various VPS files in VS Movie Maker Wizard, I can see that the file I am having trouble with does not activate the INFO button in the open file dialog box. I also note that project files that contain only a video clip do have the INFO button activated.

I just discovered that an image file I had placed in the project was causing the problem as far as VS movie maker wizard. I have also tested and confirmed that I can only open VS project files in Movie Maker 6 PLus if I save the project as a version ten VS file. Any advice on this? Thanks again.

And I can only repeat:
You also need to know that a Video Studio Project (.vsp) file is NOT a video file. It is only a small text file which tells Video Studio what video files are included in a project, where they are located, what editing has been done to them etc. They can only be opened by Video Studio (and Ulead Movie Factory) so I am very surprised when you say you managed to open one such file in Windows Movie Maker! I suspect what you mean when you say you saved it as 'a version ten file' was that you actually saved it as (probably) a DV/AVI file which Movie Maker will certainly accept.
Moreover, the AVI file you gave the properties for shows that it is XVid, which is a highly compressed format not meant to be edited. It should first be converted to either DV/AVI or DVD-compliant mpeg-2. Video Studio can theoretically do that conversion as long as you have the XVid codec on your computer (it is not automatically there but requires you to have installed it). For that, after editing, choose Share > Create Video File > DVD.

There are also conversion programs out there which can do the conversion, such as the free SUPER program which you can download from www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

In any case, XVID is not a format which is accepted by Windows Movie Maker, quite apart from anything else.

I also remain totally unclear why you are soing some parts of this editing job in Video Studio and some in Movie Maker -- or did you just try Movie Maker because you couldn't get VS to work properly?

Can the OP confirm whether he is trying to open the VSP in Movie Maker or Movie Factory. The latter would make a little more sense.

Ken:

Thank you for the information in xvd file. I will try the conversion and see what happens.

Here is the source of my confusion and perhaps someone can clarify for me. My understanding is that that MovieMaker is a tool to burn completed projects to DVD which gives you a great deal more options in selecting the finishing touches does than VideoSTUDIO. I do not perceive MovieMaker as the ultimate editing tool as is VS. Hence I created my project in VS and fully expected that Moviemaker would read the VSP file so that I could apply the bells and whistles to the finished product.

Also, my confusion stems from the fact the VS opens the VSP file just fine however the very same file cannot be read into MM unless I save it from VS as a VS version 10 file. Perhaps I am not using the software correctly or as intended. I would certainly welcome any enlightenment. Thanks again for the assistance.

Again, you have not made it clear if you are using Windows MovieMaker or DVD Movie Factory...

Sorry if I was not clear. I am trying to open this vsp file in Ulead MovieFactory PLus Ver 6. I just realized I have been calling it MovieMaker. My apologies for the confusion.

Thanks,

Steve

Ah!!! Well at least we know where we are... And yes, Movie Factory is primarily an authoring program with some modest editing capacity thrown in to make it stand-alone; whereas VS is its complement -- primarily an editing program, with an authoring module thrown in (though one which has now become pretty powerful, though still without all the capacity of Movie Factory). But VS is much more stand-alone than MF6+ as an all-round editing/authoring program. So unless you are after something very specific that MF6+ can do which VS cannot, I would stick with VS until you get a bit more experience with the Ulead products.

As for the remainder of your problem(s), I confess ignorance about opening VS project files in MF6. I knew it could be done, but I don't do it. However, it just so happens that I have a couple of recent projects done in VS11.5+ which I also happened to save as VS10 projects for other reasons. However, I can at least confirm that MF6+ will not open the VS11.5+ project files ('cannot read files') but happily opened the VS10 .vsp files. So you are certainly right on that score. But maybe someone who actually uses this workflow might jump in here with useful suggestions.

But I still say your original problem came from using a video clip format which required a specific codec to be installed on your computer. And this would be the case for both VS and MF. We now know the video in question is XVid. Hopefully by now you have installed the XVid codec which hopefully has rectified things. If not, then I can only repeat my suggestion that you consider converting the XVid clips to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 before doing any editing at all. You could try using VS for this, as long as the XVid codec has been installed (Share > Create Video File > DVD). Or you could use the SUPER program I have already mentioned.
