Unable to open PS12 .ufo / Vista - Is There a Fix?

Post by gebirgsjager »

I can't open ANY of my .ufo files (Vista, PS12). I can't delete them. I can't cut and copy them. Nothing. Just before I logged on to this forum, I tried one more time to be sure and something funny happened.

I tried to open a .ufo file that wouldn't open. But this time when I went to open the files, I saw that one of the .ufo files had a small thumbnail of the actual image (instead of the generic camera icon) and I was able to open it. I closed it. I tried to reopen it...no thumbnail....and I couldn't open it.

I did the research. I'm just making sure I didn't miss a solution in the dozens of threads I found. I didn't seem to see a concrete solution, just couple of possible ideas.

I read this great thread:

http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... n+ufo+file

but I think the basic answer then was "there is no solution."

One gentleman mentioned a patch that seemd to clear the problem up. Maybe I'll try that?

Thanks in advance.

Are the Regional Settings in Control Panel set to USA English? Is there any possible language conflict, or keyboard conflict, or character set (font) conflict with the version you are using? If an upgrade (patch) was installed, was it for exactly the same regional language idiom. (Might be a sorting problem?)

Is Corel Media One installed? with PI X3, I think that Media One creates uneditable UFO (jpg sidecar) thumbnails in a proprietary
Corel directory, but that PI X3 may not have access to those thumbnails, and thus PI must recreate them from scratch. I need to check that.

Also from within PI X3 it seems that the user must be careful to use the application browser and not the generic Windows Explorer browser tree to open UFO files.

Hello JM_2,

Thanks for thse thoughts. I'll check out the things you mentioned. I don'
t know what Media One is?

I did find that if I use the File/Browse command instead of File/Open, I can get PS12 to open my ufo's. Strange. I tried deleting one, and that worked also using Browse. But once in the Recycle Bin, and I can't delete them from there. So, my problem now is that in order to empty my Recycle Bin, I have to do it maually. or else the computer freezes. What a pain in the a**.

Best,
Blair

If anybody is reading this thread who was in the same boat I was, this patch works perfectly. It clears up all of the ufo problems, even though it is not listed as one of the fixes.
