Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, there are over 800 different types of video which use the .avi extension. It is just a wrapper or carrier format. 'True' uncompressed .avi is huge -- 65 GB per hour of video. DV/AVI is more compressed but still large at 13 GB per hour of video. But at the other end of the spectrum are the highly compressed formats like DivX or XVid which can squeeze one hour of high quality video into a 700 MB CD!

So we need to know something about where you got this video before being able to say which codec you might need. At a guess, though, if you downloaded it from the web, it is likely to use either the DivX or XVid codec. The latter is free and open source and can be found with a simple Google search. And you can get a free public version of the DivX codec from DivX.com
