Welcome to the forums,
Your firewall may be blocking the program from connecting to the internet, or you may not have your internet connection enabled.
With VS and other Corel/Ulead apps, there is a "check for updates" function that is on by default. When you first install the program it will launch, connecting to Corel's website. This is one of the first things I disable in the Preferences (File menu>Preferences or just press F6 on your keyboard).
Ulead and Corel may produce 1 or 2 updates/fixes per version, so having the program to automatically check for updates is not necessary.
So if you have your internet disabled (which is good while editing video), enable it long enough to be able to get the program fully launched, and into the preferences dialog. Disable the Check Ulead Website every....days. Then you can disable your internet connection again and see if VS still freezes up..
