Ripple editing
I wanted to create/edit a sound-only file out of a couple of songs. Strange enough, ripple edit in the sound track (no video) seems impossible while ripple editing is being selected for that audio track.

Are your songs just audio, or are they part of a video clip? Ripple editing is directed towards the main video track. In other words, all other tracks will lock based on the main video track. Ripple editing does not work with just the overlay, text, or audio tracks.

Not quite sure here what it is your doing with a video editor.
You have sound but no video?
Audacity.
This is a sound editor. You can export the soundtrack from your video editor as a WAV file. Open the file with Audacity and make powerful alterations, fades, cuts, mixes, clean out unwanted sounds, echoes and a variety of other useful edits. You can then save the cleaned up sound file and then import it back into your video editor.

Agree. I know there several audio editor available . I used to be able though, with Ulead Media Studio 6.5 (not Vista compatible), to ripple edit audio which was very usefull to create/edit photo slideshows with "the right music at te right moment". I also want(ed) to limit the number of editors for my AV applications..
