I'm using VideoStudio 11 under XP Home SP3. When I try to insert an .mpg file into the timeline I get the message:
get unable to open file ... file format mismatch 16803:1:2
Do I need some kind of codec to do this? Thanks for any help.

Okay, I've done the profile and here's the info on the file I'm trying to add:
created by a program called CapDVHS from a Motorola DCT6416 cable PVR box over a firewire connection, size is 4.8MB.
inserted into a new, unnamed VideoStudio 11 project as the first item, no rendering format specified.
I'm using base VideoStudio 11, not VideoStudio 11 Plus.

The short answer re the codec, is that yes, you probably need one. But first, can you insert the file in the VS library window, as opposed to the timeline? If so, can you right click on it and copy all its Properties here please.
As far as I can see, your Motorola is a High Definition dual tuner device which records to the device's in-built hard disc. Now, it could be that -- like my own dual HDTV card -- it records using a particular version of the mpeg-2 format which Video Studio cannot see, even with the codec installed. In my case, it uses the .tp extension. If you cannot even install your own file in VS, then does Windows My Computer/Windows Explorer at least give you the extension of the file?
Anyway, if it is only 4.8 MB, it must be a pretty short file -- only a couple of seconds... Can you confirm how long it is?
Anyway, what I have to do with my .tp files is put them through a freeware program called HDTV2MPEG2. This converts it to a version of mpeg-2 which VS can see. You might therefore want to try that.

Thanks for the reply. I'm unable to insert the video in the library. It gives the same error. The video is so short because I'm using it as a test. I've tried other files from the same source and they all behave the same way. The way I'm creating the file is with the CapDVHS program as opposed to directly off the hard drive of the PVR. This is because the software my cable company has loaded on the PVR doesn't enable me to directly access the hard drive so I have to record in real time over a firewire connection. The info I have for CapDVHS says that it records in mpeg-2 format. The extension on the file it creates is .mpg. I think I need a codec because on another machine I have WinDVD and when I installed the try before you buy version of VS 11 it was able to load the file. Unfortunately the evaluation period has expired on that machine for VS11 and so has the evaluation period for WinDVD for this machine! I could buy WinDVD for this machine except I want to know before I do that it will solve the problem. Also is there a cheaper source of codecs, possibly through Corel, to solve this kind of problem?
