I have just bought and installed Video Studio 11.5. When i start it up it goes to the Edit tab (not sure if that's normal), then when i change it to the Capture tab it goes into "Not Responding". I can't change the source, the Capture Start icon doesn't highlight. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it and also downloaded the program again and it hasn't made any difference. I have Vista but i thought this version was ok with vista. Can someone help please this is very frustrating.

Thanks

I'm still having the same problem. I had already check the knowledge base on the corel website with no luck and haven't heard anything from the tech people either.

I originally bought a bundle that contained VS 6 SE DVD and the Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 DVD Creator. Because i couldn't upgrade this version i bought version 11.5.

As soon as i go into the Capture Panel and try to do anything it goes into "Not Responding".

Am i missing something? At this point i have no idea.

Yes, you apparently missed Ron's link to a post that requests more information. Supplying that info may give a better idea as to what the problem is.

I've come on this forum to ask for help not to get chewed out and guess what, I'm not a computer expert. So please feel free to Taaaalk Sloooow!

Typically, when you get an SE version of VS with a hardware product, the software is specifically tweaked to work with that hardware. Does the capture work with the v6 SE? If so, I would stick to capturing with that, then import those clips into your new v11.5.

Did I talk slow enough?

You have Windows Vista Home Premium, so what we need to do is check that your computer is recognising your capture device. Vista has built into it Windows Movie Maker, see if that will import your video. This will tell us if there is a problem with the hardware / drivers etc.

Black Lab your talking was just right , Thanks. This is the message that I got when I tried using VS 6

Failed to build a preview graph.
Capturing Failed
The file created is corrupt and unusable.
It will automatically be deleted.

Then when I clicked on OK it displayed this:

Unable to switch to Capture Mode
Check if your Video capture driver is working properly.
Failed to build a preview graph.
[15001:33:1]
[15023:4:2]

I haven't come across those before.

Onto Windows Movie Maker. This is what happened when i tried to use WMM.

Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device. Verify that the digital video device is properly connected and turned on.

I did check it and it said it was working properly. I did a search on the Belkin product and from what i've found it doesn't look like they have done a driver for Vista. From what i've seen anyway.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for your help.

Ok. The next obvious question is exactly what type of camera (brand, model) are you trying to hook up via the Belkin?

And since you you are using Vista, then suggestions that you use VS 6 SE DVD to capture won't work since obviously that early version, regardless of anything else, is simply not rated to work with Vista.

My problem, however, is whether the Belkin requires special drivers that work with Vista... I see you have visited the Belkin website to check that out but got no result. I simply know nothing about the device, so cannot say one way or the other. However, it is difficult to think that such a large company has not taken special steps to ensure that their device works with Vista. So a logical conclusion could also be that it does not require any special drivers, either with XP or Vista.

It is also possible that the Belkin is one of the many devices that only work with the software they came with. And though in this case it might have been an early version of VS, many hardware companies are known to tweak a software package so that it will work with their hardwar. But that does not mean that later versions of the untweaked software will work with the same hardware. Again, you would need to consult the Belkin website to see what is normally distributed these days with their capture devices which will also work with Vista.

Finally, the reason I asked about the make and model of your camera, if it is digital, then if it is a mini DV camera, you shouldn't be using the Belkin anyway. Instead, you should only be capturing via Firewire. And if it is a hard drive or mini DVD camera, again the Belkin is not needed. In other words, the Belkin is only needed if you are using an old analogue camera.

The camera that I have is a Panasonic NV-DS65. I have in the past used a capture cable with this camera on our older laptop that has XP as the OS. I am also going to see if VS11.5 and the Belkin product will work on the XP laptop, just as an experiment but haven't got that far yet. I will also do a bit more searching on the Belkin product.

Can you explain the firewire to me please. I haven't had anything to do with that before.

Thanks

Well, your camera is most definitely a mini DV model, and so you MUST use Firewire to capture from it in the best quality. In fact, it is not really capture -- just transfer of the DV video from the camera to your computer at exactly the same high quality level via Firewire.

You can Google for details about Firewire, and it would probably be a good thing if you did because then you would see photographs of what the Firewire plugs and cables look like. Your camera will have, apart from probably having a mini USB port, a mini 4 pin Firewire plug which will probably be labelled DV. Of course, for the firewire to work, you need a Firewire card in your computer. Have a look at Google photos then check the ports on the back of your computer to see if any look like it. If not, then Firewire cards are pretty cheap these days ($20 here in Australia) and will go into a spare slot on your motherboard. They usually also come with a cable, but you need to make sure it is a 4 pin (camera end) to 6 pin (computer end).

Trying to capture using any other device will never get you anything like the quality of a Firewire capture. DV is also not a lossy format, and is easily editable. So you edit it in its original format, and only when you have finished editing do you convert it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2 or whatever final format you want. As it is, with the Belkin device, you will be capturing to mpeg-2 over what is essentially an analogue capture device. I am not sure, but I think your camera moreover only uses USB 1.0 so at most you would probably only be able to capture streaming quality (i.e. low quality) video at best from it. Moreover, mpeg is a lossy format and can cause difficulty editing it.

So I would recommend in the strongest terms that you use Firewire!

Ken you are fantastic. I'm not going to through a party just yet, but I'm close to it. I'm about 99.9% sure that my laptop has the firewire port. I've checked the book that came with the laptop. I just need to buy a cable and then try it out.

Thank you very much

It will be good if it does. But in that case you would need a 4 pin to 4 pin cable as all laptops that I am aware of use only the smaller plug, identical to that on the camera...

So I went and bought the DV cable and yippee it does work. I discovered about the 4 and 6 pins when i was at the shop.

Thanks for all your help :D
