I am using the free trial of VideoStudio 11 on my Vista home PC eagerly anticipating it would be wonderful and I will buy it. Installation went fine. First tried importing files from a DVD (now I have finally managed to transfer family vhs movies to digital!), would check the boxes and it would get to 100% and then give me that message.

I changed the Data Execution Prevention settings to allow ULead, but still no go.

Then after reading here, I dragged/dropped the files onto my computer in Windows Explorer, changed the VOB extentions to mpg, and got them into VideoStudio. I made a clip and was saving it, it nearly completed when I got the dreaded closing message again!

What can I do to make this stop???? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I went into the error messages and copy/pasted the most recent one with ULead, I hope it makes sense to someone here?

Welcome to the forums Holly,

Did you first record the VHS home videos to DVD, and now trying to import the DVD into VS for editing? How was the DVD recorded, using a stand-alone DVD Player/Recorder? Is the DVD from a camcorder that records to DVD? If so could you advise what make/model of camcorder?

OR

Have you captured (using what device, connected how to your PC) VHS family videos? Then the importing DVD is just another issue? Some capture devices are not compatible with VS. One such device that is notoriously incompatible is Pinnacle's. They make it proprietary to their own software packages.

I've had previous issues when trying to import videos on DVD. This primarily was due to some file in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG folder being either over-written or just corrupted by installing other versions. However this would not crash the program, just not parse the files, and give an error code.

Basically what the above paragraph is getting at is do you have, or have you recently installed any other trial or full versions of video or DVD programs? Most of the time Corel/Ulead programs get along with each other, and you can have several versions installed at a time. However when they state to be sure and install the trial versions to a different folder than Ulead Systems it is to prevent the trial from replacing files that other versions are using.

I also checked to see if the Update Pack addressed the type of problem you're having, but it seems that it does not. So I'm thinking that the problem may have to do with the DVD, but not knowing what type of DVD, and where it originated it's difficult to tell at this point.

I used a separate VHS-to-DVD recorder to make the DVDs from the VHS tapes, then put the DVD in the computer disk drive; so the computer was not used in that process and no camcorder was attached. I hope I wrote that so it makes sense and answers your question.

I've had no problem playing the disk on the computer (either in RealPlayer or Ulead, just can't seem to use the files in Ulead.

And no, I haven't tried any other programs. I was going to buy the Adobe video editing program but before downloading the trial I saw that the reviews were so bad with reported crashes more the norm than the exception...I got more optimistic with Ulead. On the bright side I'm grateful it isn't freezing the computer totally, and merely closing the program. I just hope I can get this sorted out.

thank you!

I have never seen that 'StackHash_e52f' faulting application message before. However, on doing a Google search, it appears to be quite common. And it appears that it might relate to a program called SecurRom which is embedded in some (particuarly gaming) programs by their manufacturer as a means of ensuring that their program is not loaded illegally or too many times... However, it also seems to affect trial version of Adobe programs. Moreover, it seems to occur on Vista machines rather than XP ones, and Vista 64 bit in particular when 32 bit programs are loaded on it.

As far as I am aware, however, it is not included in Corel/Ulead programs, including the trial version. I could be wrong, but no one else has reported that particular error message to my knowledge and I have been on this forum, and fairly attentive, for a long time!!

Now, all that being said, I simply don't know what to suggest. If indeed the problem is caused by SecurRom or some similar software protection program, and if indeed Corel does not use that module but it was embedded by some other (trial?) program and it is causing a conflict with VS, then you would need to think about what recent programs you might have installed, and uninstall them...

One person having problems with that same StackHash error on Adobe Audition, which he was trying to activate, said he solved the problem by starting Vista's msconfig module, selecting Selective Startup, unchecking Load startup items and rebooting. However, it also involved uninstalling the trial version of Audition. But I think Adobe trial versions are different from Corel/Ulead, and you may not be able to get the VS trial version to work if you uninstall then reinstall. I think you would get a msg saying that the trial period has expired.

Ultimately, about the only practical thing I can suggest is that you actually buy the full version. Do NOT activate the trial version -- too many people have problems going that way. And if you continue to have problems, then Corel has a full refund policy if you return it within 30 days from purchase.
