Mixing AVCHD and HDV in one project

I use VS 11.5+.

I have two camcorders, a Sony SR1E that records AVCHD to HDD and a Canon HV10 that records HDV to tape.

Would it be possible to mix clips from both cameras in one project?

My computer is not up to editing AVCHD. Would I therefore be able to convert the AVCHD to HDV format (any suggestions as to how) and then capture the HDV from the canon camera into the same project.

That said as I do not, at present have an HDTV, would I be best advised to convert both the AVCHD and the HDV to standard mpeg or AVI and then do my editing.

My usual output is to standard DVD or YouTube.com

Regards

Paul

If you only intend to burn a standard def DVD (which seems rather a waste with two high def cameras!!!), then it would seem to be better to downconvert from the start, during the capture/import function.

If, however, you want to store edited high def footage, then with the AVCHD you would need to use the SmartProxy function in VS11.5+ -- as long as your computer falls within the specifications for using that (at least an Intel P4 3.0 GHz with hyperthreading processor or one of the older dual core (as opposed to Core 2 Duo) jobs). Looking at your specs, it should be up to it.

However, if you convert the AVCHD to high def mpeg-2, I would simply put your AVCHD file (unedited or if you have already done it somehow, edited) into the Editor timeline, and select Share > Create Video File > HDV > 1080i for HDV.

Thanks Ken

My wife and I are currently in negotiation regarding a more powerful PC and an HD capable television.
