Etymonix Mpeg2 encoder compatible with VS? How do I install

Post by stannmaple »

Hi. I found an MPEG2 video encoder that say it works with Ulead Video studio. I can't figure out where to extract it to though. I assume program files- ulead systems- ulead video studio 10, but what foler? I downloaded the trial and would like to try it out. Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think it would go in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG folder.

Thanks for the reply. That would definitely seem to be correct. However, I think I must be doing something very wrong. When I extract it there, it simply puts a setup file in that folder. When I run setup, it says the encoder is "installed" but it does not give me an option of WHERE to install it, and it does not show up in video studio when trying to render a file. I don't think I've ever had this much trouble installing a codec! Any ideas? Thanks again!

sorry to hijak your thread...why do you want to change the codec.

I was considering that approach as my outout files were very soft instead of sharp.

Just wondered if you had similar reasons?

Cheers

No problem at all. The reason I'd like to change the codec is because when I have an uncompressed AVI file, the color is PERFECT- exactly how I need it to be. When I save to MPEG even on the highest setting, the color is no longer correct. Now, it LOOKS correct, but I'm working with anaglyphic 3D material (for use with red/cyan glasses) and although it's very CLOSE, it produces a bit more ghosting (double images) than the uncompressed file. I'm wondering if this is ALWAYS the case when encoding to MPEG2 or if different codecs will give different results.
If you check out this codec and figure out how to install it, please let me know. I'm at a total loss. Thanks!

I suspect you are going to find that a DVD/mpeg-2 cannot display the full range of colours, particularly with reds...

color

Post by stannmaple »

I was afraid I might be hearing that :(
However, it's actually the cyan (light blue) that is giving me problems. I know there MUST be a way to do it or at LEAST compensate for it (adjust the color in my uncompressed AVI so that it comes out correctly when encoded to MPEG2?) Spy Kids 3D on DVD looks perfect. I realize they probably spent a fair amount more money than I am spending making it :) but nonetheless, I'd rather try and fail than not try at all. Do you have any experience installing different MPEG2 encoders Ken? If not, there is info for the one I have my eye on here: http://3d2f.com/programs/4-628-etymonix ... load.shtml
Any ideas? Thanks again everyone for all the replies. It's much appreciated!

Stan,

Are you using VS10+ or 11+? If it is the latter that codec will not work. I just read on the link you provided that it uses the VFW (Video for Windows) architecture. VS11+ does not support VFW, and if you are running VS10+ with the Vista patch, the VFW is removed.

Also for VS10+ the MainConcept MPEG DLL is located in the main VS10 folder.

About 3 years ago, I tried but could never find a way -- like you -- of getting it to show up anywhere. As I just said a day or so ago in another thread on the same theme as this, when you choose Custom as the output format, or use the Make Movie Manager to make a template, then choose mpeg as the format, the General tab does not give you any scope to choose a different codec, though in theory it has a drop down menu. But that seems fixed to the Ulead MPEG.Now encoder.

This is unlike the AVI template choice where under the Compression tab you can choose amongst a wide variety of codecs which use the .avi extension. What is more, those other codecs don't have to be in the Ulead folder for VS to see them. Now I know that I have more than one mpeg-2 codec on this computer, including the Cyberlink ones which Microsoft seems to prefer to the Ulead one as it uses them in WMP. But of course VS still can't see them.

As for your colour question, have you tried experimenting with turning off or on the Colour Filter option in File > Preferences > Edit? Or in the burning module, first icon in the bottom left of screen > Preferences > Advanced?

glitch?

Post by stannmaple »

Hi Ken,
So are you telling me there is a "glitch" in the system? Certainly, when I add an AVI codec, it shows up in virtualdub (and I think video studio as well) so in theory, the codec IS installed- I just can't access it? There has to be a way. The product says right in the description that it is compatible with video studio. I don't know if I have much hope of correcting the color completely, but it's certainly worth a shot if I can get the codec to work.

Interesting suggestion on the color filter. I never knew that was there! You seem to know EVERYTHING out this program (I've read several of your other posts on this forum) Unfortunately, it didn't change anything- at least not noticeably. Really, the ghosting is minimal, but it's still noticeable. If I can make it better, I'd like to, if not, I'd at least like to find out that it's not possible through trial and error. Thanks for all the help on this one. Let me know if you (or anyone else) figures out how to get that drop down menu to work. Thanks again!

possible?

Post by stannmaple »

Just to clarify,
Is it DEFINITELY not possible to intall another MPEG-2 codec for use with video studio?

Mpeg encoder

Do different Mpeg encoders show up in video studio 11? If so, it might time to me to upgrade. Anybody know?
