BDMV and Playstation 3

Anybody try creating a Blu-ray disc with HDV files?

I created BR project with mens into BR folders and burned them with Nero 8.

The disc does not work with the PS3 at all, but it works with my computer using PowerDVD 8 Ultra.

Anyone else having issues?

I am still in the world of Standard Definition but when I read this a few days ago it appears it may address your issue.

Don't think so, Steve. I originally started answering this one too, but re-read and realised he was talking about an actual Blu-Ray disc, rather than a hybrid one on a standard DVD, whether single or dual layer...

Mind you, my AVCHD hybrid discs certainly burn to standard DVD with the BDMV structure on them, and they play fine in my PS3. Commercial Blu-Ray discs play in my PS3 (though probably have a different structure on them). And I understand the PS3 can also play Blu-Ray hybrid discs. So I cannot imagine why it would not play a home-made Blu-Ray disc, all other things being equal.

Oh, and of course I make my AVCHD hybrid discs from HDV files from my Canon HV20 camera.

I burned my own created work onto an LG Blu-ray 25GB SL Rewritable disc to test out.

The disc plays fine on my LG GGW-H20L drive obviously with no issues.

However, when I tried it on my friend's PS3, the disc didn't play. I kept on getting "This video cannot be viewed. Error 80029941".

I also found on that the PS3 does not play version 1.0 BD-RE discs (my discs were Version 2 BTW using DVD Identifier).

After doing some more research, I found out starting with firmware 2.20, Blu-ray discs with BDMV files will not play on the PS3. When I create the Blu-ray folders, a CERTIFICATE + BDMV folders are created.

I then stumbled upon this site:

Apparently this has something to do with the copy protection identifier or whatnot. I'm trying to find a way to strip it of my OWN work.

So even with the PS3, a Blu-ray player is NOT a full Blu-ray player. I burned a Blu-ray disc with blu-ray properties and it won't play on a PS3. That's funny.

I'm going to head to Best Buy or Circuit City to test my work on an actual blu-ray player (non-PS3) to see if this works or not.

You may need the latest PS3 firmware update which is 2.30. That may help.

In fact I think there is an even more recent firmware update that 2.30. I think it is 2.36 but wouldn't swear on it. I updated to 2.30 when I first bought the PS3 and just a week or so ago, it updated once again...

Zclyh3 -- have you tried using VS to actually burn your Blu-Ray disc, as opposed to Nero? As I say, when I choose to burn an AVCHD disc, VS inserts a Blu-Ray BDMV structure on the disc which PS3 -- at least at my end -- has no trouble reading...

2.36 ?? At least here in US the newest version is the 2.4.

I have used Nero to burn the disc, that didn't work. Then, I used VS to burn the disc and now will attempt to see if it works.

I personally don't have a PS3. I go to a friend's house to test it out.

Hi,
The PS3 is known NOT to play BDMV folders burnt to standard DVD's.
Which is actually a 3X dvd similar to the HD-DVD 3X DVD's except using the Blu-Ray Format. Really no difference.

Yes, they will play in the computer via software.
You can play the BDMV disc's videos manually on the PS3 by navigating to the STREAMS folders and playing the large videos that have the extension M2TS. So press the "X" button on the BDMV Icon ,when the BDMV folder is highlighted & scroll down to the "STREAMS" folder, click on it ("X") and you will see all your video files.
The large files starting with 00000.m2ts are the videos and the smaller files are the menu items. But the PS3 only plays BDMV or BDAV Blu-Ray Disks.
When you do navigate to the STREAMS folder if you highlight the 00000.m2ts large video files and hit the "Triangle" button (Options) you can copy them to the PS3's local harddisk. After they are on the PS3's Hard disk you can also rename them.

If you make AVCHD disks (DVD's) (using your HD Mpeg2 videos as the source videos) they will play fine in a PS3 (after the software converts them to AVC/H264 videos ) as an AVCHD disk using the AVC/H264 codec with Dolby 5.1 Audio..

etech -- I think the problem he has is that he has in fact burned to a Blu-Ray 25 GB disc and it won't play on his friend's PS3. It is not Blu-Ray on a standard DVD...

sl2008 -- I just tried updating the firmware on the PS3 using the internet connection, but it says I have the latest available (2.36).

The Australian PS3 website announced that 2.40 was released on 2 July but is currently unavailable for unexplained reasons. And I just checked the US website, and it too only has 2.36 available for the moment.

Sony has pulled the 2.4 for "further testing" and the most recent firmware is again the 2.36. Many people has updated it to the 2.4 when it became available for few days.

Hmmm... reading all that, I'm rather glad I *didn't* update!

Then again, I didn't buy the PS3 for gaming, only for its Blu-Ray/multimedia capacity, and 2.36 is fine for that...
