Can the PS3 play dual layer discs?

Hi,

I've just created my second set of AV-CHD videos with Videostuido 11.5 plus and want to put it onto a single disc if possible. However, I'm not sure if the PS3 can play either +R DL or -R DL discs?

Has anyone tried this and what where the results like?

Unfortunately, I have never burned a dual layer AVCHD disc, so I don't know if the PS3 has any problem with playing such home made discs. However, it has no problem with standard definition dual layer discs, so there is no barrier in principle.

Just be aware that more than a few users have had trouble burning SD dual layer discs with VS, though this also happens with other editing packages apparently. It seems to be the nature of the beast. Home-made discs are actually burned, while commercial dual layer discs are of course pressed. So the same technical problems surrounding the layer change point could also be a problem with the technologically more complex AVCHD discs.

Hi,

Amm not to sure on their precise name but i'm talking about a standard DVD that's been burnt as an AVCHD disc. I have made a standard DVD-R one work ok but was wondering what dual layer DVD's will work with the PS3?

In a word yes.

I use various Dual Layer and all work fine. PS3 is great for playing discs, plays all of them compared to some other dvd players etc that dont recognise.

Rich -- again I have to ask whether you are talking about AVCHD hybrid discs being burned on standard definition dual layer discs. Or are you only talking about standard DVDs burned on dual layer discs. Neither you nor Neonbob are clear about that.

Im talking about putting AVCHD footage onto a standard DVD (dual layer), thereby getting maybe 40 mins of footage on dvd.

(I think!)

I originally did mine through the Sony Handcam freeware that I got with the camcorder not Ulead VS11 but I woudl imagine that the same options are availible.

Thanks for that confirmation, Rich -- useful to know.

And yes, VS 11.5+ does burn AVCHD hybrid discs on standard DVDs, though of course they will only play on Blu-Ray players which are also rated to play such hybrid discs such as the Sony PlayStation 3. In addition, unlike many software packages which also can burn such discs, VS also allows the preparation of high definition menus for the discs, which I find a nice extra touch.

Hum...

Well I have got some DVD+R Dual layer discs by Mirror and both of my DVD players are having trouble even recognising them (they are both spec'ed to be able to write to +R DL) My main machine with my HP 940d has picked up the brand name and the fact it is dual layer but says that the disc has zero space available to write to and my Sony DR 700U is just making one hell of a noise trying to read it??

Humm not a good start into the world of dual layered discs, epically as I got 20 of the damn things!

I've found my new HP laptop does recognise the discs but is going to take years to compress an AVCHD on that.

I notice there is a write ACHVD structure to HD setting from the disk burn menu but it's always disabled. Is there any way I can enable that write the files to the directory structure then just burn the files to my laptop DVD drive??

First, many DVD burners (and for that matter, players) prefer particular brands of DVD blanks, and that seems particularly so when it comes to dual layer. And as I have already said, some users have difficulty burning standard defini.tion DVDs to them anyway. So putting both those factors together AND adding the fact you are trying to make a totally non-conventional type of disc, I suspect that -- though others have succeeded -- it might be a hit-and-miss thing. And on top of that, how reliable are these 'Mirror' discs?

As for the option to burn an AVCHD/BDVM structure on your hard disk, that is not possible with VS11.5+. It *is* however possible to burn a Blu-Ray/BDVM structure to hard disk (I understand). However, it is not possible to burn this Blu-Ray folder to a standard definition DVD, whether single or dual layer.

I don't know how you find out what discs work with what drives then really, I thought if it was a DVD+ then it would work on + recorders and likewise for - discs.

I could put VS11.5+ on my laptop but it took over 2 and half hours on my quad core to generate a 1 sided DVD who knows how long the poor laptop would take with it's quad core T60 processors.

Humm.. in that case I'll fire an email off to HP to see what discs they think work with their drives, I'll take bets on if anyone thinks I'll get a response or not
