when i save a project to memory stick using studio 9 and go to another computer with studio 9 installed it will not open the project and i get file mis match how can i save ongoing work so i can work on same project on diffrent computers

I've never tried moving a project... I think it's best stick to one computer for a project, if possible. If you really need to switch computers frequently, there is probably a way, but if I had to change computers once in the middle of a project, I'd probably start over.

The "project" is just a set of instructions. You need all of the related video files on the memory stick too (or on both computer's hard drives). And, since the project file keeps track of the video file locations, the memory stick needs the same drive letter on both computers.

If any audio/video files are on other drives (other than the memory stick), the files need to be in the same file/path on both computers... That means that the drive letters, folders, and sub folders need to be the same. This could be done fairly easily if you only have one video file, or if all your project-related audio/video files can be moved into a single folder (and in an "easy" location).

VS 11+ included, for the first time, a Package Manager which bundles all relevant files together precisely for this purpose. I have never tried it. However, I imagine that you would still need to be careful about the paths mentioned by DVD Doug. But in this case, you would be asked to relink if the path was different and you could then simply point VS at the new path.

I do this very frequently as I have three different computers I use. Make a temporary folder and copy all material you are using into it as a first step of the project. Add any new material to that folder only before linking to it. When you save the project make sure and save the video studio project to the same place.

The folder is now self contained so to speak and you can just copy the folder to your other computer anywhere and open the project. Relink will find the media if your drive location has changed without any problems once you point it to it.

I doubt if you can work directly off your removable media unless it's an actual hard drive so be sure to completely copy the folder. And also keep track of all your stuff so you can delete as needed later or you will soon be shopping for new hard drives.

I do this sort of thing quite often with various computer programs and data files. I have a 1 TB external USB hard drive.
So that I can work from any of my 5 computers I have assigned the same drive letter to the USB drive whenever it is connected to one of my machines.
You can do the same with a memory stick. I also have also set up a network system at my workplace involving a few dozen computers that all see various programs and data files on a network share using the same drive letter.

Briefly if you keep everything in the same location the computer will then know where to find them. This applies to anything - spreadsheets, access databases, etc not just video files.

Ken has already mentioned that if you want to gather all of your files together into one place - possibly they are spread out all over the computer with perhaps music files here, videos there and photographs somewhere else, smart package will gather them all into one place and relink them, plus it will create a project file in that same directory.
You can then copy that directory to some removable medias such as discs, memory sticks or external hard drives and transport them to another computer somewhere else, or simply archive them for future use.

The OP is using VS 9

Is smart package included with that version?

Sorry missed that bit, Smart Package came in with the current version which is 11. This means that users of earlier versions would have to prepare everything manually by moving all used material into one common folder and relinking. Once that has been done all that is necessary is to make sure that you use the same drive letter and paths when using that material on another computer.

Basically you have to move everything.

It helps if everything, video clips, audio clips, images are saved to the same folder, and that the original project is able to be opened. (is a working project)
I have a separate sub-folder for each type.

When you have copied all clips across, opening the project will force a Re-Link

Usually the first clip in the project is selected. All other clips within the same folder should re-link. If this does not happen, save the project then re-open, forcing a Re-Link. You may have to repeat for each folder.
