Update 15 July 08

Post by jannerhank »

I did notice another thing on the orginial Videostuidio 7 CD it also had Windows Media Encoder, but not on the Videostudio 11.5 CD.

So I downloaded the latest version of Windows Media Encoder and I can capture both sound and vision so that means that my hardware is working which was a nagging thought in my mind. Unfortunately the resolution is crap (something like 380 X 220).

I don't know if you get the mag 'PC Pro' in Aussie but they had a big article about capture and transfering video over the last 3 isseus. I am trying to transfer 3 VHS aircraft tapes to DVD as they are not easily available any longer (TSR 2, Canberra and Lightning). OK I know you had the Canberra and I served in the RAF on a Hastings Commonwelth Squardron for 4 years and also worked on Aussie Camberras when they passed through Singapore on thier way to and on thier way back from Vietnam in the mid 1960's.

Hope you can see why I want to preserve these as VCR's are not easily available any longer in the U.K. except for second hand ones.

To capture my own VHS tapes, I use a VCR too, but connect it via RCA plugs (such as are used on your device) to the AV connection of one of my mini DV cameras (or my Sony Digital 8 camera). The camera is then connected via firewire to my computer. So I can capture with VS11.5+ (and previous versions) using the mini DV as a passthrough device in high quality DV/AVI format. Easy to edit, no discernible loss of quality.

As it happened, I was in the Australian RAAF for a while, but a very long time ago (like 38 years ago!!) But the Canberra bombers were already gone by then... except in their very modifed form as a covert part of the USAF spy fleet over the former USSR!!!

I Wonder DRM?

Post by jannerhank »

Hi Ken,
I am wondering about DRM? As I only came back from Saudi Arabia after doing 12 years out there due to cancer. Had the op 3 years ago but got pensioned off. I don't know when DRM came in and the tapes are 6 years old.

I joined the RAF as a Boy Entrant at 15 years old, trained as a Air Radar Mech, But waited until I was 21 when I did my Air Radar Fitter's course (Radar and Wireless). left in 1964. Worked in Calibration for the USAF. US Army, ITT, Hewlett Packard, Airworks, Saudi Air Force, and Phillips on Linear Accelerators.

Damm good trianing.

I don't really know about DRM. But are the VHS tapes in question commercial ones? If so, they would have some old form of copyright protection codes on them, and just possibly, VS will refuse to copy them... Just a thought...
