"file format mismatch" error - loading mpegs

Post by Rich407 »

I am trying to load several .mpeg files into a new project, but keep getting the "file format mismatch" error. I checked that the files really are .mpeg files and they play fine with Windows Media. I usually load .mpg files from my hard drive camcorder and that works excellent, but these .mpeg's are from a friend's camera. Any clues how I can fix this?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

Can you at least install a thumbnail of one of the problem files in the Library pane of VS? If so, can you right click on it and copy ALL its Properties here, please.

If not, can you give us the make and model of your friend's camera? It could be that your friend's camera is a high definition one and uses an mpeg-4 codec (AVCHD), and VS11+ cannot handle them. You need to follow the free upgrade path to VS11.5+ for that.

Unfortunately, it won't load them at all. I'll ask my friend for the camera model.

Thanks.

The camera that was used is a Nikon Coolpix S10. The files are size 320x240, 4:3 ratio, .mpeg

Apparently, the camera has these options:

Movie clips
• 640 x 480@ 30fps
• 320 x 240 @ 15/30fps
• 160 x 120 @ 15fps
• 320 x 240 @ 30fps (PictMotion)
• with sound

Ah! The Nikon of course is a digital *still* camera which has the facility to take short videos. But in fact it does not film these in mpg format, but in an older Motion JPEG (MJPEG) format. And I think that is at the centre of your problem. The MJPEG codec would not be on your computer unless you have specifically installed it. It should be on the installation CD which would have come with the Nikon. So you would need to borrow that and install the codec. Nikon calls it a QuickTime motion jpeg, but I think you should be able to open it in VS as long as VS has access to the codec.
