insert editing

Post by gakayaker »

I'm a dinosaur from the video edit past (1980s) learning computer editing. I use to be able to lay the "A" roll tract and time code down, and then go back and "insert edit" over this video/audio, making perfect edits to the music/audio already down. I've read the manual, search the forum, and realize I don't know the terminology enough to even be sure how to ask my question. Is insert editing now what's called ripple editing? Ripple sounds like it affect all video down stream? I want to lay down my A track and insert B track without changing down stream video or audio.

Some of the Pictures I see associated with long time posters are of "old guys" like me. How 'bout helping out an old dinosaur with a computer VSedit
makeover? thanks

I think Ripple Editing is what you are talking about. With Ripple Editing turned off, any edits you make will effect the clips "down stream". With Ripple Editing turned on the clips down stream will be adjusted per the edits you make in front of them.

I know I didn't explain that very well  so why don't you check out this tutorial: http://www.takeoneflix.com/ulead-videos ... e-editing/

thanks jeff, I did watch the tutorial (audio was terrible). I'm still a little confused. What I've been trying is to lay my "A" roll video on the video track, and then use the overlay track, with the video full screen, to accomplish the "classic" insert edit. I'm just not sure this is the best way to do it or not. All the tutorials I've seen, seem to make the overlay tracks as "special effects" tracks, and to me, insert editing is VERY basic...

I thought by "insert editing" you were actually inserting clips between clips already on the time line. Hence, ripple editing would have been helpful. But you are talking about using the overlay track for B-roll, or cut-away footage, correct? If so you are doing it correctly, and I apologize for probably confusing you with the ripple editing.

I use the overlay tracks both ways, as a true overlay of one track over another for B-roll or for effects such as picture-in-picture, depending on the project.
