is that DVD full? There are two size measurements that I see... 4.38 and 4.79 GB? Which one is the correct reading? How many GB total can I fit onto the DVD and will it notify me that i cannot burn it if it is over the max?

Thanks! 8)

yes, for a dvd5 disc

yes, you are over by the red-line amount. the two numbers mean the "same" thing. One is how Marketing labels their dvd5 discs. The other is how it will be reported by your computer.

From videohelp.com
<<<
DVD-5, holds around 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GB where 1 kbyte is 1024 bytes* . DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Single Sided Single Layered. This is the most common DVD Media, often called 4.7 GB Media.

Thanks for the fast reply! When I look at all of the files on my computer, they take up just under 1.5gb; why does the DVD use so much more (more than 4.7) and is there any way to minimize these sizes of the movies?

Project Template

Post by GeorgeW »

It could be that DMF4 is planning to convert your source videos to your project template settings. In your picture, there is a little GEAR icon on the bottom left. Hit that icon to see what template your project is using.

If your source videos are already compliant, then check the box that says "Do not convert compliant mpeg files" (after you hit that gear icon).

If they are NOT compliant, DMF4 will need to convert them to your project template. You can adjust the template properties (resolution, bitrate, audio, etc...) to make everything fit...

What are the properties of your source videos? Are they divx .avi's??? or some other type of file??? right-click on them, and select properties to show what they are...

yes, those will have to be converted by DMF4 (using the project settings you have selected where you hit that gear icon).

So maybe I should just do a two-dvd set or something? Because I'd rather not sacrifice quality for quantity

depends...

Post by GeorgeW »

it really depends. how many minutes are all your source videos combined?

Also, what is their resolution? 720x480, 352x480, 320x240, etc???

You might be re-encoding at higher resolution and bitrates (that could be overkill depending on your original source videos).

leprechaun,

In my experience, such minimal resizing as indicated in your example will not be discernible, even on quality input. For the convenience of a single disk I would resize.
