Captured VHS/VCR Problems

Post by aayyuce65 »

I've just downloaded a trial version of DVD MF 6.0 Plus and used it capture my old VHS tapes from my analog capture card. When I play the mpg files back (using either WMP or VMC) the file plays back in Fast Forward mode - i.e. it looks like it has been recorded while pressing Fast Forward.

The settings I used are:

MPEG files (MPGE2 - I can't seem to change this anywhere to MPEG1 !)
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

The capture card is a FusionHDTV Dual Express
Composite Video In

OS - Vista Home Ultimate SP1
MoBo - Asus P5K Deluxe
Processor - C2D E670 2.4GHz
VGA - Asus 8600GT 512M

Is there anything else I need to be aware of to capture properly ??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all, you want MPEG-2. Also, you don't say where you are from, so I'll assume PAL is correct (North America would be NTSC). The only other thing that looks odd is your Frame-based field order. Capturing from an analog source should be Upper Field First. But with all that said I don't think any of those would cause your problem.

Make sure all your capture card/graphics/video drivers are up to date, as well as your Microsoft DirectX.

You are generally better-off capturing with the capture software that came with your capture card. Some capture-hardware and capture-software just don't "play well together".

Once you have a digital file on your hard drive, you can use Movie Factory (or any software of your choice) to edit, author, and burn the DVD.
