Hi All,
I'm having trouble trying to split an mpeg video file using MF6+.
The sequence I'm using is as follows: MF6+ launcher, New Video Project, Create DVD-Video. At this point I'm at Step 1/3 Select source and import. I select Add Video Files and import my media file which is one continuous 2.3GB .mpg file. This plays fine from end to end.
I want to split this file using scene changes so I go into Edit Room, click the Video tab, Split Video... Auto scene detection OK.
After some processing time the scenes appear in Edit Room's story board view. All plays fine.
Then what do I do?
If I leave Edit Room the scenes don't come up on the Step 1/3 story board view.
Where are the split files?
I've a feeling I'm doing something stupid cos this is a very basic function.
Any help much appreciated.
Spliting Video files with MF6+
I'm not sure if this is what you want to do but if I want to split files and create physical different sections (new files). I go into the "Multi-Trim" module, mark the beginning & end of the sections I want to split.
Then while still in the "Multi-Trim" section highlight one of the videos and click of the left arrow located to the left of the timeline ( <--- ). When you click on that arrow the video you have highlighted can be exported to your local harddisk.
After I split the videos and save them on the local harddisk I then clear the timeline of the original video and load the split ones I had previous exported from the Multi-Trim Module.

Spliting Video files with MF6+
Okay. Thanks I can see what you're doing but isn't this rather tedious? You can't automatically detect scene changes and you'd have to export file by file. I have about 30 scenes!
And what is Slit Video for if it doesn't actually split the video?
Surely there must be a better way?

First, make sure under preferences (f6 hOTKEY) that Resampling Quality=BEST.
Assign an easy directory to access as your "Working Folder".
1. You want to create a DVD.
2. You also want to split the videos into individual mpeg2 videos (segments).
3. Splitting a large mpeg2 video into smaller videos requires the new smaller videos to be completely "Mpeg2 Compliant".
There are a few methods in MF6 to accomplish file spliting. But because you still want to in the end create a dvd then you should do that first creating chapters of the segments you wish to extract later on.
When you have a large source video then the method I describe below is the fastest & most reliable due to the fact that spliting mpeg files requires some re-encoding for them to stay dvd compliant. If you don't split a mpeg file correctly it can still play but has corruption. This corruption will eventually show up while editing or the dvd player will have problems playing the videos. So when spliting mpeg2 video it's important that they are compliant mpeg2 video files.
Besides the other method I described if you want to split & save your videos as separate video files then the correct method is this.
Create a dvd or burn dvd folders to your harddisk and import the dvd chapters as separate videos (they will show up as separate videos on screen 1/3 after importing them).
Take notice that when you go into the Edit -> Video tab & click on Split Video that the same screen comes up if your click on the 2nd Icon under the preview display. The pop-up box will display "Use Scene change information to add chapters". The best method to multi-split large mpeg video files into small video files is divide them into chapters, then import the dvd into MF6 using the import feature.
Also take notice that when in the "Edit Room" Timeline mode you can manually add chapter points by clicking of the top of the timeline (Left click to insert & Right Click to remove them.
So I would use the 2nd Icon to detect scence changes which will add chapters.
If you go into the Multi-Trim module when you leave MF6 will also ask you if you want to make these splits as chapters (Then answer Yes).
So your chapters will be your split points. After splitting or scene detection I described above go into the "Add/Edit Chapters" and you should be them as separate chapters.
Make a dvd with or without menus ( prefer writing dvd folders).
Start a new MF6 session & click on the "Import DVD Video" select whether to import from your physical dvd you burnt or the Harddisk folder. (whatever method you selected in step 3/3.
After the import screen displays the video & chapters only mark the chapters you want to import, each one of these chapters will now be imported as separate mpeg2 video files. Don't click on the very top checkbox when importing or the whole video will be imported as one video file.
After the videos are imported into the timeline save the project.
For your information when MF6 imports videos from a physical dvd or dvd folders the imported videos are located in a new folder called "Capture" this new "Capture folder" is directly located under your assigned "Working Folder" that you assigned under MF6 "Preferences".
You can copy/move/rename them after they are on the harddisk.
Note: In step 3/3, the burning module click on the "Right hand down arrow" to display additional features. This is where you can create dvd folders on your harddisk or an ISO image file.
Hope this helps,
