First of all transcoding -- even between high-quality, high-bitrate formats -- results in slight encoding differences unique to the algorithms used. These usually show up in small scene details and near edges.
Also, MPEG2 is not a lossless format, and in the case of DVD-resolution video, it carries only about 1/3 of the data that DV AVI does, for instance. Furthermore, the AVI in question could be uncompressed, in which case MPEG2 would carry only 1/15th of the data of the AVI file.
