Canon HV 30 capture problem with VS11

Post by blane »

I have a brand spanking new Canon HV30, just got it last night....I am in that lovely honeymoon period with a new electronic device...except for one thing. I can't seem to get VS11 to capture any HDV. I can record HDV just fine. I can send it out as DV, and VS11 captures just fine. When the camera is in HDV mode, VS11 does not recognize (or recognise) it. I read thru some forums last night and thought that VS11 supports HDV but maybe I need 11.5 or up?

I really like the VS program but am getting frustrated. I may have to have look at Sony Vegas, as I have seen some other forums where it works pretty good.

Welcome to the forums,

If you have VS11 not the Plus version, then it will not recognize the HDV or AVCHD video files. See Ulead's online comparison chart: http://www.ulead.com/vs/compare2.htm

If you have VS11.0 Plus, then you need to install the Update Patch and then the Power Pack. The Power Pack is what brings your version to 11.5. Download and install them from the following link: http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp.htm

NOTE Ignore the Hot Fix, unless you had the AVControl SDK problems installing the main program

Can you confirm that you are using Firewire for the capture, please.

In fact, Video Studio's ability to capture and edit HDV began with Video Studio 10+ and continues with VS11+/11.5+. But as Ron has suggested, you need to have the +/PLUS version, not the plain vanilla version of VS11.

By the way, I have a HV20 and others here have the HV30, and they report no problems capturing HDV with VS10+, VS11+ or VS11.5+ via Firewire. With VS10+, though, there is a Canon-specific update patch. The only thing I can't get VS11.5+ to do with HDV is, after editing, send it back to the camera. But curiously enough, VS10+ with that patch, on the same computer, has no trouble doing so. For what it is worth, Adobe Premiere Pro 3 also doesn't seem to work with the export back to camera, so I suspect it may be very much something about Canon cameras. I don't know whether Vegas can do this if that ever becomes your intention.

Hi mate,

I have the HV30 (great camera!) I went tape way because people are having heaps of trouble with AVCHD.
I have VS11+ & it captures fine. Ken is right about VS11 not being able to write back to the HV30 but as he says VS10+ will.

Thanks for the quick replies. I was getting a little confused with what was in which version. I have an old install of 10(not sure if it is + or not), and now I am using 11 (regular, not +), attaching camera via Firewire. I guess I will have to bump up a level. I did download a trial of Vegas, but wow, it looks complicated! That is one thing I like about VS, it is so intuitive, that even a casual user like me and make it do things. My purchase of 11 is just a couple of months old, bit galls me a bit to need an upgrade so soon!

Yes, it seems to be an AMAZING camera. I was worried about tape being a thing of the past, and I suppose it is but it works great for me. And I am coming from a MiniDV SD camera, and I needed the ability to load those tapes onto my computer, so still needed a tape capability.

OK. Now for an even more stupid question...Where can I find the version number? Usually I would look under the Help/About tab. But I don's see one...When I fire up my laptop, it first says 10, then 10+. I do see an HDV 1394 device option, so I guess it is 10+. The reason I went up to 11 was that I couldn't find the license code for my older version and I needed to edit some video, and I got mad and just downloaded a new version. Now it looks like I may need to try and find my 10+ license code....Hmmm

Oh, and the bad news is my laptop is old and doesn't have 1394 on it. Or the HD space for that matter!

To find your version AND serial number, click on the ? symbol in the top right hand corner of the VS screen, then choose the tried and trusted 'About...'

As for your laptop, a lot of new laptops AND desktops don't come with firewire either. The only thing you can do with a laptop in such a situation is to buy a PCMCIA card adapter which usually comes with two 4 pin Firewire jacks. Firewire cards for desktops, by contrast, are cheap and easy to install as long as you have a spare slot on your motherboard. If you buy one, try to get one which comes bundled with a firewire cable which otherwise can cost more than the card! And it should normally be a 4 in (camera end) to 6 pin (computer end) cable.

Hi Ken, Again this reference to a Canon update patch! Where on earth did you find it? I am in dire need of it! Please give me a link to it!

Please don't post twice. I have just posted the link in your other post! http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp_10.htm and scroll down. That particular patch is second from the bottom.

Sorry Ken, the treads have become so complicated I get lost. In the meantime I've downloaded the patch. Thanks very much for the link.
