Failed to Burn?

Post by s0n1cm »

Hi,

I'm testing video studio at the moment and the editor seems fine but when I try to write to a DVD it all goes ok until It starts writing to the DVD itself and I get "Failed To burn" with "500:0:0" in a box?

Any ideas what this means, I don't want to buy it if I can't actually get it to write to a DVD, I've tried various DVD+RW/-RW and 2 -R's that it's coasted!

Thanks in advance, also i'm looking at geting a blu-ray writer and wondered if the LG GGW-H10N would work ok?

Thanks

What is your workflow? For some people going straight from the editing timeline to Share>Create Disc can cause problems. For that reason a Suggested Workflow was created.

We also need a lot more information before anyone can make even a vaguely informed guess. Please read this (which suggests to all users that they read it first before posting, though few do!!): http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 1454#41454 Then come back to us with the requested information...

Thanks

I don't have the workflow here as I'm writing this from work (forgot to ask last night). I've just ordered the 11.5plus from Amazon anyway so I should get the full version tomorrow.

I'll give it a go then, for the record i've downloaded the files onto the computer which are m2ts (think that's right). I am then editing a 5 minute snap and compressing it. When I come to create the AVCHD disc is when it errors.

Looking into it more it might be the way I am compressing the video as the ones I compress under the Sony Vegas tool seem to be ok in Moviestudio writing to DVD it's the one I've made in movie studio that does not seem to work.

I'll post more information tomorrow when I get the full-version.

Thanks again for the quick replies.

Mike.

Well, it should work when you get VS11.5+ as that is the only version that can handle AVCHD (.m2ts) files. The trial version is only of VS11+, I am afraid. Hope you don't have a Panasonic S9 AVCHD camera, though, as that seems to be the only one which has conflicts with VS11.5+ in handling its output.

I also trust you have either a Core 2 Quad or Duo because that is what you really need for AVCHD. If you have a P4 3.0 GHz with hyperthreading or higher, you can use VS's SmartProxy to be able to edit the AVCHD, but you could find, as I did with my old P4 3.0 GHZ machine that even though you could edit, you could not play the AVCHD back smoothly unless you have a Quad or Core 2 Duo... Sorry, but that's the nature of the beast.

If you think you might be coming back here with more questions, by the way, please fill in your profile details so that we will not have to ask every time what your system specifications are.

Hi Ken,

Yes sorry (profile updated :) ) I do have the same processor as yourself the Q6600 so the machine should be ok. At the moment I have an external HP DVD writer the 940d but am looking at getting a blu-ray writer in the future. My camera is the Sony HDR-SR12E so yep it's not the Panasonic.

Hi,

Right I now have the full version all installed and running, but now I have another issue. I seem unable to actually get all the way though the create DVD menu to the writing page?

I say "Create DVD" from the main share menu, then select the video's I want to include, next I select the menu for it and preview (which seems to be more jerky on this version?) but even though I can click next it does nothing.

It would not be so bad if it told me what it thought was wrong, I have tried different videos, with and without a project loaded and nothing makes any difference?

Any ideas on this would be appreciated?

Thanks

Ahhh I've got it past that point now. When I un installed the trial it left stuff in the common files/DVD folder that had to be removed for some reason.

I don't think anyone here knows what the specific error code means. Those are for the programmer/developers.

Fail to burn means just that. Why did it? Well it could be due to your workflow, which BlackLab asked for earlier, and you have not provided yet. It could also be due to the type of media (discs) being used. Some burners will not burn certain brands.

Sorry,

The method I have used is to edit the 3 clips and save them as AVCHD files, then close VS down.

Reload VS and click Share-Create Disk on a blank clean project.

The multiplexing seems to get to around 40% then bombs out with the error message..?

I too would love to see a full list of error codes, but unfortunately none has ever been posted here. I have collected a few over the years, though not precisely the two error codes you have received. However, in the past, some people have received other messages starting with a '5' and someone who then worked for Ulead said that it indicated the problem was with the media being used i.e. the brand or type of the disc. If you wish, you can check http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters to know what media is suitable for your burner.

I guess I'll have to try some other brands to see if I can get one to work.

Thanks for the help and sorry it took a while to get all the information out of me.

I make my AVCHD hybrid discs using high definition mpeg-2 from my HDV camera. Originally, I was doing what you do: edit the original video then convert it to AVCHD (Share > Create Video File > AVCHD). And I would then insert that AVCHD into the burning module. It worked, and I actually managed to burn the discs, so did not encounter the problem you have.

However, the point of this post is that I have now changed my workflow, just for producing AVCHD discs, and you might want to consider trying this. Note, however, that the reason I changed my workflow had to do with quality settings, and not because of any problem in actually burning an AVCHD disc.

Anyway, I now edit my HDV projects, and produce a new HDV file (which I need for other purposes...) Then I close my project to empty the timeline, select Share > Create Disc > AVCHD. When the burning module opens, I insert the new HDV (i.e. unconverted) files in the burning timeline. I then go into the second icon in the bottom left of screen and select 'Change MPEG settings'. I do this because I don't like the settings used as defaults by Video Studio for AVCHD if I do the conversion HDV > AVCHD in the Editing module.

Anyway, I change the bitrate to 16800 or 17000 (as that seems to be the bitrate used by a lot of AVCHD cameras) and I make it a constant bitrate rather than the VS default of variable bitrate. Then I build the menu and burn (successfully). It takes quite some time as the program has to convert the HDV to AVCHD first, though as part of the burning process. But the end quality on the disc is noticeably very much better than the VS defaults.

Another thing: have you gone to the Microsoft DirectX website recently and updated your Windows DirectX with the latest update patch, dated June 2008? That also seems to affect (and improve) Video Studio's performance in the burning module for a lot of people. Please note that DirectX updates are not included in the usual round of Windows automatic updates, so if you have not done so manually yourself, you have an old version of DirectX.

Ok, I tried everything you said and seemed to have got a good AVCHD DVD out of it (I did forget to disable chapters in the menu and the 5.1 sound so will have to do it again but it worked  )

Thanks for all the advice, I did not know another DirectX update had been put out (would have thought windows update would have that?).

I am going to follow your settings for AVCHD so will see how they get on, it's just a shame that all the complicated stuff in the editor seems ok but it's let down a bit by the easiest part... the writing of the DVD ??

Thanks for the help
