splitting and renaming a long clip.

Post by lionelandre »

Hey there.

I used to have EXTENSIVE editing experience about 16 years ago. I actually dabbled in semi pro editing (on Betacam at the time) and now I've just bought my first camcorder since. My past experience is, I think, relevant to my question. (the things a newborn will make you do,m it's incredible.)

So, now I'm the proud owner of an HF100 and of ulead11.5. I have this fairly long video of my dog and I playing in the yard. it was shot from a stand, and I want to extract ONLY the jumps and assemble them to video.

In the old days, I would have had a board, written the start and end index points of that segment, with a comment / title for later use. then I would have keyed in the start and end marks in my timeline and let the editor grab the pieces and place them in the order I chose.

How do I do this in Videostudio 11? I found multi-trim, but I can't seem to find a way to make multiple clips out of one long clip.

I've figured out the soundtrack part and the ripple editing pretty easily (cool features) but I can't, for the life of me, split my one long clip. Keep in mind, that I might want to use an extract of something I shot today for a video in 6 months, so I don't necessarily want to have to redo the work everytime. an export to uncompressed AVCHD is perfectly fine

any help is more than appreciated. :)

Thanks,

Lionel

Multitrim

Post by Ken Veal »

Play your video in Multitrim
Stop it where you want a scene to start
Click [ below start
Play your video until where you want the scene to end
Click ] below end
repeat as many times as you want and when you have finished click OK and the scenes you created will go into the timeline showing a seemless
video of the scenes you selected.
You can use the jog wheel to get frame accurate edits .........Ken

You can also do the same thing manually by scrolling through your video, marking in and out points with the jog slider, then using the scissors icon to the bottom right of the preview screen to make the cuts. You can then delete the sections you don't want.

Neither this method nor multitrim affect the original video which remains unscathed for later use.

thanks. I had found the multi clip. it's one option, but I'm looking for a "cutting floor" type of approach where I can select the portions I want, and place them for later use in the media library. one original file, and multiple smaller one is fine. I'm getting the sense that it's not possible.

Hi

When cutting a clip in the timeline you don¡¦t actually cut the video file on the hard drive, just the virtual clip in the timeline.

As Ken suggested use the scissors to cut the video into sections/clips

Select the clip you require and go to Clip-Save Trimmed Video this will render the clip to a separate file saved to the working folder. A thumbnail will be placed in the library

Another option is to only capture what you want to use, instead of the entire clip. I do a lot of sports videos. As I am capturing I am constantly starting and stopping capture, and the resulting library then has many separate clips that I can rearrange to my hearts content.

That's an option I hadn't considered. I just need to figure out how to do that from my HF100, which I'm sure is easy enough. (manual ? what's that? ;) )

Thanks Black lab. Mine will be very happy to be the star of my first movie. !!!

Ah, your camera does not use tapes, so you are importing the entire contents in one shot. Gotcha. Perhaps my method will not work for you.

Sounds like you want to have more flexibility with movie clips - i.e. cutting , pasting and moving them around like word processing.

Unfortunately, that's a limitation with this software. I've been a Sony Vegas user for many years, which offers much more flexibility and manipulation of movie clips than VS 11.5+. With Vegas you can click and drag clips around wherever you want. Not so with VS.

I'm using the VS now only because I can make AVCHD movies without re-rendering. I'm hopeful that Vegas will be offering more AVCHD functionality in an upcoming update.

And just to retain a sense of proportion, Vegas is of course a prosumer level product and costs a lot more than the consumer level Video Studio. Mind you, I have no idea whether the cut-down Sony Movie Studio Platinum can do the same as Vegas in this regard... And in any case, I have no problem at all with the flexibility of VS in manipulating movie clips. It's a matter of what you get used to, I suppose...

That's exactly right - it's a matter of what you get used to. Most good software out there should satisfy 90% of the typical user's needs. Unfortunately I started with Vegas so now working with VS seems like a major downgrade but really I just need to get used to it.

By the way, I purchase my software with academic pricing by using my not-yet-expired student ID from 3 years ago. VS 11.5+ cost me a ridiculous $45. I can get Vegas for under $280.

If anyone has any friends or colleagues in academia, try to take advantage of it. There are several online vendors that sell brand new software at reduced prices, all you need is a photo ID to purchase.

Re what you get used to, I started my video editing 'career' with Video Studio 7. Well actually with Video Wave III, but I never got the hang of that and bought VS7. Have worked my way up. But of course I have tried other packages. I use Adobe Premiere Pro for my standard definition editing quite a lot these days. But that enormously expensive program is essentially useless to me as an amateur user when processing/editing high def video. For that, the output is in separate video and audio files from Adobe, and to put it together to burn in some sort of usable form, you have to lash out and spend another thousand on Encore because as far as I can see, that is the only program which recognises Premiere's split output formats.

So I have returned full time to VS11.5+ now that I am focused on the various high def formats. And I have to add that I am amazed at how good it is for what I want it to do in this regard. Sure, there are a few aspects of Adobe which I wouldn't mind seeing. But they are predominantly cosmetic things which VS mostly provides work arounds for. And for the enormous difference in price between the two products, it is a sacrifice most consumer level editors should be happy to make!

Cutting and rearranging

Post by sclgwhite »

When I have a long video that I want to rearrange, I start at the beginning, advance to the desired point, cut with the scissors, drag and drop the first segment into the library, rename that segment "1", then delete the first segment from the timeline. I proceed in this fashion until the timeline is empty and all segments are in the library numbered "1" through whatever. (I must not fail to rename each segment as soon as it goes into the library, because segments many times decide where they want to go when I drop them.) Then I drag each segment into the timeline in the order I want them to appear in the video. I highlight them in the library and play them to refresh my memory on what they are before I put them into the timeline. If I get totally confused, I can delete everything out of the timeline and start over because the segments remain intact in the library.

Hi

VS is not very good at inserting clips to the library and keeping the order. Unless you use (VS 9)

From the timeline:-
If you copy and paste the clips to the library they should insert in order.
(right click a clip and select copy)

From the hard drive
Select the clips in a folder then drag to the library, you must drag the first selected clip.
