Hi all,
This problem is driving me crazy. I'm using Ulead Video Studio 7 Basic on Win98 SE. I've got a series of videos from mini-DV saved on my HDD. Most of them are around 4GB, the limit under Win98 FAT32. I start a new project, import the first video, edit it, then insert the next video into the timeline, and edit that too, etc.
So now I have a final project that is about 45 mins long. I can't render that into an avi because it would be more than 4GB (although the Ulead reports the error as out of disk space, but I triple checked my working folders etc are all pointing at the drive with 50GB free, and checked that indeed it was that drive that was having its space used up as it was rendering - presumably Ulead isn't smart enough to carve it up into 4GB chunks for me).
So I saved my project under 3 names, say proj1, proj2, proj3. So then I open proj1 and delete the last two thirds of the timeline scenes, leaving me with around 15 mins of video. The intention is to save this project and render it, and likewise make my way through proj2 and proj3. So then I'd have 3 projects with about 15 mins each, that can each be separately rendered into avi and later imported and an mpeg produced for dvd or whatever.
BUT, Ulead still thinks each video is aroun 19 mins long. Even if I delete it down to 5 mins (or 9 mins), it has 19 mins of blank space. Just a black screen. There is no thumbnail in the timeline - I've deleted everything. Yet it still remembers the old initial length that I imported or something. I've tried adding more on (the project got longer) then deleting random bits (it then shrunk, but never below 19 min 32 sec). When I rendered a 4 min project it did the 4 mins and then added 15 mins of black at the end! There's no sound track or anything for it to feel the need to extend it. So 4 mins still became 4 GB. I've been struggling with all sorts of gotcha's for weeks and I was hoping to show family and friends the video this Monday but this is stuffing me up big time and I'm out of ideas. The project preview range shows 19 min 32 sec but is ghosted out. How can I convince Ulead that there really isn't that much in the clip!!!
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brett

Brett,
You have probably used the scissors or Multi-Trim Video controls to edit your captured video. These are "virtual" edits, that only save pointers to positions in the huge capture file.
You have to use the Save Trimmed Video control to actually create a separate video file of just your edited clip. Doing this will dramatically reduce the file size of each project.
It may seem like a lot of work to transform each project but it is actually fairly easy. Open a project and select the first video clip. You will see a huge capture file in the preview window with the Mark-In an Mark-Out cursors marking the clip. If you then select Save Trimmed Video, that clip will be rendered into a separate file and an icon will be placed in your library.
At this point, delete the virtual clip from the timeline and then drag the real clip to the timeline at the same position. Repeat ad nauseum.
John
BTW, when your project is converted, create an Mpeg2 file of the project.
You select this video file and the other two video files from the other projects when you are ready to burn all three to a DVD.

I'm running XP so I don't have the file size limits you do. However I have seen a similar problem when I have edited a tape, but want to do a test burn of 10 minutes just to be sure I have field order or other properties set correctly. That way I can take the RW DVD and play it on my TV.
Sometimes after saving a long project and then cutting out all but 10 minutes or so of video VS reports that the project is stilll full length.
Usually what I've done is trim out the video clips, but leave a title, overlay or music track at or near the end of the original project.
Because the title, overlay or music is at the far end of the time line it doesn't show on screen unless I scroll way to the end of the old project.
This may or may not be your problem, but it's another thing to check.

John, thanks for that. Wow, I was missing a whole intermediate stage then I guess - the saving trimmed video bit. Yeah, a pain to go through each scene now and do that, but no other choice I guess. I've started working my way through it now. I didn't quite realise the dual purpose of the library.
Bob, thanks, I'll look out for titles etc floating around at the end too - easy to miss.
Great stuff guys - my sanity is saved for at least a few hours more.
If you don't hear back on this thread then safe to assume it all went well.
Cheers.

Actually, going back to this old thread, it turned out my problem was the title bits floating around down the end as suggested by Bob. They were so narrow in the timeline that I didn't notice them. When I deleted a section of video, the stupid title section wasn't automatically deleted too. Getting rid of it shrunk the video back to the right length and didn't leave all the blank space - that was just videostudio filling in time until it got to the unwanted title.
So saving trimmed video doesn't seem necessary (I started down that path and it was such a pain so I went back and checked Bob's suggestion) - the virtual edit was fine and I saved/shared my project as avi (same as project settings) and it was the right size. Then I made a DVD and it all worked fine and has been shown at several family functions. All's well that ends well. Thanks for everyone's help.
