Error when creating a video file

Post by murphydog77 »

Hello! I've been using different versions VS for a couple of years, but this is the first time this particular problem has happened to me. I've finished editing my video and am ready to render the video as both .wmv and .mp4 files. This is a process I've done many times, including twice last week. I suppose the only reason it's not working tonight is because it's an important project to me  .

When I click on "Create Video File," choose my settings, and name my file, I get this error message when I click "Save": "The file may be write-protected." This code is also in the dialog box: [15033:10:2].

I've been able to save my work as I go so the folder I've been working on is not write-protected (nor should it be as I am the only person who has ever worked on this computer--it's *my* computer and *I* set it up). I've tried saving it as a new project to no avail, saving it to different directories, restarting both VS and my computer--nothing is working.

I did a search of this forum and found this one thread from last year, but really didn't glean anything from it: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... eprotected .

Has anyone run into this problem lately and is there something I can do to fix this so I can get this project done? Thanks!

Welcome to the forums... and sorry it could not be under happier circumstances!

That previous thread you referred to was the last time I recall this problem having been discussed here. I see that you haven't yet filled in the Profile button at the top of this page, so we have no idea of what your computer specifications and operating system are. If it is Vista, then have you tried the various things suggested by etech in that referenced thread?

Was there anything peculiar about the source video in your project? Is it all from the same source? What are its Properties? (Right click on the files within VS and copy the Properties here please -- or of various files if they are from different sources and in different formats.)

I know Vista does some strange things. When I got this new computer with Vista Ultimate on it, I naturally transferred over many of my data files from the old computer. But I found that most (all?) of them had suddently become Read Only (i.e. Write Protected) and I have to manually change that for each file. I confess, though, that I did not transfer any video files. And as etech said in that other thread, the way VS works, the original files should not be touched anyway in the Share process, so the Write Protect should not (logically) occur with any of the source files.

I guess the only other thing I can think of is to check the project file using Windows Explorer/My Computer to see if something has happened to write protect it. And perhaps I'd do the same for the .exe files in the VS program folder...

Thanks for your help! I've been a lurker for a while and have learned a lot, so I figured I'd introduce myself with a real stumper  . I filled in the profile, but am using a Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium.

I tried the things suggested by etech in the other thread, though I did not create a user login for my computer. I'm always logged in as administrator and have been since I bought it a year ago in February. I've been using VS 11 since last September without any problems (except for frequent crashes on closing lately). Here are the properties from my current project:

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 32.000 kHz, 12 Bit, Stereo

I just tried to open another project that I have on the back burner for the time being and I get the same error message. I'm wondering if maybe just uninstalling/reinstalling VS would solve the problem.

Hmmmm... very strange, since it is DV you are talking about, which a lot of us use all the time. Mind you, when I started out in video editing back in 2001/02, I used a Dell laptop with Windows ME, and I regularly got the same message. It turned out to be a driver issue with my camera. In those days, ME didn't come with the larger array of drivers that we currently have. I also had to download a patch from Microsoft for the DV codec installation which is part of Windows. But I doubt that could be the same problem here.

Have your thought about doing a System Restore to a point last week when you knew it was all working correctly? I also understand Dell has a recovery partitition on its notebooks which may have a Repair facility in it. You could go down the list of things it might repair. This may even include Vista. I am not suggesting a full reformat and reinstallation of Vista. But you can insert the Vista disc and choose a Repair function. It takes some time, and looks as though it might be doing a full reinstall, but everything currently on your computer by way of data and programs is left alone unless Vista detects something needs correcting.

Have you recently installed any mega codec pack? These often cause conflicts with existing codecs...

On an unrelated matter, I notice your DV is using 12 bit audio at 32,000 KHz. You would get better quality audio at 16 bit 44000 khz. You have to change this in the camera itself, so look at your camera Manual for instructions on that. It's usually a simple Menu adjustment under Audio where you can toggle between 12 and 16 bit.

Thanks for the tips! I wasn't aware about the audio quality on the camera.

I did a couple of System Restores (because I didn't feel the first went back far enough) and that didn't work. As a last-ditch effort to get it to work and after already checking the properties of the folder, I went to the executable file and changed the Privilege Level of it to "Run this program as an administrator" on the Properties dialog box. It's a minor PITB because every time I open the program, I have to confirm that I want to open it, but it finally works and lets me render movies.

I'm still baffled as to why it stopped letting me output the movies even though I could edit them. As long as this fix works, I'm happy.

If you are using Vista and you try to save to certain "root" folders, you will get the protect error. Either save to another directory or when you open VideoStudio right-click on it and run it as Administrator.

Give it a shot.

I had the same problem and was about to pay for support when I googled 'write-protected' and sifting through found (to my amazement) the solution. Corel did not install an error message appropriate to what is the problem. What is prompting this error message is that we have exceeded a certain pre-defined limit in a folder. Just switch the output to a new folder. No more error message and you are back in business.
