Sharing as 16:9 is squeezed. Please help

Post by radman2020 »

I have a new Canon vixia hv30 that is now hi def. I have some problems... not sure if related to the new camera.

I record in 16:9
I make a project in 16:9.
I share as a DVD 16:9 (mpg) file and upload to youtube. It looks like a 16:9 with black bars on top and bottom but they are fairly thin and the subjects look slightly squeezed!

I export through the program (VS11) to youtube and it makes a wmv file that is listed on properties as 640 x 480 but it looks perfect on youtube with bars on top and bottom. just like a widescreen should be!

both files look fine and appropriate when I play with windows media player. What is up with this??

I'd guess that YouTube's transcoding software is having trouble with the widescreen DVD format. This really shouldn't happen, because the MPEG header contains information about aspect ratio and resolution for the file.

Note that MPEG pixels are not required to be square, so the pixel ratio is often different from the aspect ratio. (The pixels on a DVD are never square... 16x9 and 4x3 DVDs both have the same resolution and pixel ratio.) I believe non-square pixels are also allowed in WMV files, so it may be possible to have a 640x480 widescreen WMV file.

I just checked the YouTube help page, and it doesn't mention any limitations of resolution or aspect ratio... :?

thx.

it is strange.. It is definitely widescreen on the youtube page but not quite right. Never did it with my old camera. Not sure what caused the difference.

since it is working with wmv, I'll keep that for youtube but the picture doesn't seem as sharp.
