I've had this problem before in another version but forgot what I did to fix it.
When I go to capture video from a Sony video 8 camcorder it will capture about 8.22 seconds of video before it throws up the following message:
Capturing Failed
The file created is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted.
I tried connecting from the camcorder to a Video Capture Card with a built-in 4-pin (unpowered) FireWire (IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port and also from the camcorder to a firewire IEEE 1394 card and have the same results.

VS11/11+ had a problem capturing from Digital 8 cameras when you are actually playing an analogue 8mm or Hi8 cassette in it to capture the video on it via Firewire. The problem also occurred when you connected an analogue source such as VCR or analogue video camera to the Digital 8 which in turn is connected to your computer via Firewire. (There were also other problems with Firewire capture from analogue sources.) Unfortunately, the update patch dated 6 November 2007 which fixed other aspects of the problem, did not correct the capture from Digital 8 playing an analogue tape problem, though it did correct the second situation (with the Digital 8 being used only as a pass-through).
If you are in the first situation, then yes, if you capture using Windows Movie Maker and use the DV format, you can open those captured files in VS for easy editing.
For what it's worth, a lot of us here use a small free program called WinDV to capture our video from mini DV cameras, digital 8 cameras and other capture devices which use Firewire. You can download it at windv.mourek.cz
