If I buy HD camera xyz which uses format abcHD, who can guarantee that it will be here in 1, 2, 10 years with editing software to suit? No one! Who can guarantee that ANY of the current NLE softwares will even be available in 5 years? No one. Just think of those who rushed in and bought HD-DVD systems.

That is why I stick with DV/MSP8. In any case, my TV converts the DVD signal or any other SD signal to HD remarkably well, indeed, surprisingly well. So I see no need to upgrade. How many others feel as I do?
They do have a common solution. HDV. The other formats primarily are for higher end markets that were originally using digi beta etc. Sure there are a few anomalies but there's always going to be manufacturers who decide to go their own way with their own format. (most notably panasonic).
Interestingly the NLE I was forced to switch to, will edit them all, every single one without exception (including RED's 4k!), so really it's a moot point which HD codec you choose, as an up to date NLE will handle them all. And no, I can't guarantee it will be here in 5 years time, but with the amount of investment and refinement, and also the speed at which new codecs get implemented via updates, I'm confident it will be. Put it this way, there's a much higher chance it will be here when compared to a product that has been discontinued.

This is my whole point. I see several paths forward, but cannot tell which of them are likely to lead anywhere. Ergo, I don't take any of them. QED

I'll eventually take one of them, but only if I have a clear road map. I hate getting lost in the woods.

You sound like that bloke off The Matrix.

If everyone waited until a decision had been made before moving forward, nobody would make a decision and we wouldn't move forward.

The correct decision is not mine to make: it is that of the equipment manufacturers, in corpore.
