My VideoStudio keeps crashing.

Post by randomcontributor »

Hi, my name is randomcontributor. I use Ulead VideoStudio heavily when I make my videos. I'm having several problems with it:

1: Sometimes, whenever I'm speeding up clips, it crashes.
2: Sometimes when I make a video file, it is corrupted.

I would tell you the version I use, but I don't know how to find the version. All I know is that it's an SE. Also, my version doesn't take AVI files.

Welcome to the forums. However, you don't provide any real information we can work on. When you start up Video Studio, there should be a splash screen which gives the version. If not, then click on the ? symbol up in the top right of screen, then select 'About Ulead Video Studio'.

Can you right click on one of the problem files within Video Studio -- either with it in the timeline or in the library window, and copy ALL its Properties here please.

When you make a video file, what properties are you using and what format? What editing do you do to it?

There are over 800 varieties of video which call themselves .AVI so I am sure there may be some that Video Studio cannot deal with. Where are you getting the AVI files that VS cannot take? If they are downloaded from the internet, then they are likely to be XVid or DivX and you need to have the XVid or DivX codec on your computer before VS can deal with them.

Can you also give us the specifications of your computer and tell us what version of Windows you are using.

1: I could not find the "?" symbol. I know my computer calls it "Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD". Here is a picture of it on my computer if it helps: Image

2: The format I usually use is WMV. I usually increase the volume, reverse it, and apply wacky effects.

3: I use a Windows XP.

Well the photo you provided has the ? right up there where I said it was, so I am not sure why you could not see it!!! There is the ? and also the usual - and X...

Why are you using WMV as the output format? As you would realise it is a highly compressed format developed by Microsoft mainly for use on the internet. It is difficult to edit, and takes ages to render. Many people find that sometimes it causes their computer to crash...

Sorry, I thought you meant the initial screen where you have the choice of the editor or Movie Wizard.

Anyway, my version is 10.0.0110.0 SE DVD.

I use the WMV output format as I once thought it was the best choice for Ulead VS and it is easier (and takes less time) to upload to YouTube. What output format do you recommend me to use?

What are the properties of your source files? The ones you're inserting into VS to edit. Please right-click on one of those files, either in the timeline or the library, select Properties and post all of them back here. AVI is not a specific format, it is known as a wrapper or carrier for numerous different file formats, such as DV, DivX, Xvid and others.

Since you're using an SE version (Simple or Special Edition), what hardware (make, model) did your version come bundled with? SE versions are not full versions, and may not have all the features and functionality of the full versions. They are sometimes altered by the hardware manufacturers to work with their hardware.

This is the first that I've heard, that VS would not accept "avi" files. Again refer to the above reference AVI. In order to use DivX or Xvid flavors of AVI, you must have those CODECS (COmpression/DECOmpression) installed. VS does not install those codecs.

I agree your output to WMV does seem to work better for uploading to YouTube. I think Ken was of the understanding you were wanting to burn DVDs, in which case WMV would not work. For DVDs you must use DVD Compliant MPEG-2 video files.

My software came with a video capture card called "EasyCAP" apparently made in Hong Kong.

So if I'm understanding correctly, you're capturing to WMV, (MS MPEG-4), and the audio is MP3?

Does your EasyCap have a capture utility called something like CapWiz? If so are you capturing using it or VS?

While VS is able to edit WMV files, it can be very tricky. Next is that it is using MP3 audio, which is really not an genuine audio file. MP3s are video files with the video stripped away. This can cause problems with video editors. They may look for the video in MP3, and not able to find them, error out, crash or just hang while it continues to search for the video aspect of the file. So you might try converting the MP3 audio to a WAV file then using that in your project.

In VS, just go to the Share Step, select Create Sound file, and VS will create a WAV file of the audio portion of your video. Now mute or split the audio on your video track, then insert the WAV file that you just created.

I would recommend creating or converting the audio file before doing any editing of the video.

I like the very last "property" Is Editable: Yes.  More correctly Should be edited: NO.

WMV, and others are what's called distribution formats, not editable. They are meant to be distributed or viewed over the internet.
