stuttering HD-DVD from Panasonic HDC-SD9 files

Post by mirwais »

Hello everyone.
I recently purchased the moviefactory 6 plus and the HD package or whatever is called and I'm able to output an HD-DVD folder to the hard disk, and burn it with nero, but then i play it on the xbox addon and it starts to play fine for a few seconds, and then it stutters or completely stops, i made several attempts, one with the mts files I originally copy pasted from my camera's SDHD card (not good to do that apparently), and others with m2ts files I properly imported with the HDwriter software that came with the camera, none would work, stutter and the same thing. But then I made another one from a m2ts file i downloaded from the web, and it played fine on the xbox hddvd addon, so my question is if the files created with the panasonic camera are known to be incompatible or something, or I'm doing something wrong.
Oh, and Moviefactory doesn't re-encode the files, some were 1440x1080 and others were 1920x1080 both with 16800 bitrate.
If anyone has any ideas

thanx

My experience with hd dvd and stuttering was corrected by using more expensive disks. I switched to Verbatim and the problem disappeared. However if you have the A3 or A30 machine you may want to try dropping the bit rate a little to about 20M and see if that helps. This seemed to work for a few others i know with these machines.

hi, I'm using Taiyo Yuden dvd-r disks, they're supposed to be good quality, and the bitrate I'm using is 16800, unchanged from the original files, and I only have the xbox 360 addon (updated) and an hd-dvd rom drive on my computer, happens on both of them. :(
the files are from the panasonic hdc-sd9, they are h.264 files on an m2ts, ts or mts container depending on the software I use to get them from the SD card to the computer, none of them work .
Could it be that hd-dvd supports only h.264 video with lower bitrate from custom made Hd-dvds? Is there a program that lets me patch the videos or something? I tried HDpatch but it only seems to work on mpeg Hd files.

Number one when you make an HD-DVD on Standard DVD's (3X DVD's) you can only use MPEG2 Video.
Any other codecs that are acceptable for HD-DVD need to be burnt to a true HD-DVD disk. Eample: Mpeg2/AVC/V1 video codecs

So you have to convert your videos to the HDV spec
25MBS Constant Bit Rate 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 framesize.
Audio = Your choice.

Note: I've heard the Xbox has a 8MBS limitation for playing back AVC/H264 video. You may want to also confirm this. It also makes sense since the XBox360 uses a 3.2Ghz processor. You also need the latest firmware update for the XBox360.

MF6+ will allow you to put AVC/H264 video on the HD-DVD without re-encoding it but I've never gotten it to work correctly using standard dvd's..

The Xbox 360 playsback HD-WMV videos very nicely if encoded at approx 8MBS Max (8MBS Video + Audio Stream)

When you do make an HD-DVD with mpeg2 video only you need to burn it to a good reliable disk. You also do not need nero to burn the HD-DVD, you can use the "Ulead Burn-Now 4.5" program that comes with MovieFactory 6 Plus version. Using the "Copy Movie" function etc.

Thanks for your response.
Too bad you can't burn other codecs apart from mpeg2 to a 3xDVD, the option shouldn't be there then, it should be grayed out.
I'm gonna try to convert the videos to HDV, hope I don't lose a lot of quality.
I don't know about the xbox limitation for playing AVC/H264 videos, but I have the latest firmware, or I think so, since I have it connected to the internet and when an update is available I always install it, but I think the problem is with the authoring, since it stutters and plays jerky on my HD-DVD Rom drive as well on my pc.
I'm gonna try to encode in HDV or HD-WMV depending on which gives the best quality and the best encode time, any ideas?
And yes, I also used the Ulead Burn-now to burn the HD DVD, when Nero didn't work, I'll stop trying now :(
Thanks so much for your response.
Wish me luck :)

Maybe to help you out a little more if I burn avc/h264 to a 3X dvd the Toshiba player will either reject the disk or the H264 studders. Depends what video I put to play first, mpeg or h264.

On the Xbox I'm not sure of the extension but I would think you should be able to put your avc/h264 videos on a data dvd and play them back manually in file mode.
You will just have to determine what the xbox360 will read as a file extension.
I would search on the Xbox360 forums.

Too bad.
Yeah, the 360 supports HD h.264 vides but only 2.0 sound.
Anyway, there should be a patch to fix this problem on MovieFactory6,

I don't want to start a debate but your comments reflect there is something wrong with the MF6+ program, which there isn't. These are features that could be supported by other players, unfortunately the other HD-DVD burners & players never took off.
If you could burn a true HD-DVD your problems would be solved.
The 3X DVD (HD-DVD on standard DVD's) was only supported due to consumer demand with the on set of High Definition.

Just a thought, think about how much money ulead spent on the coding & writing/production of HD-DVD's in MF6+, only to have the HD-DVD format fail. Even Microsoft dropped it from future X-Boxes. I wouldn't expect to see HD-DVD in the next release of MovieFactory 7. The format has been discontinued.

BTW- A Playstation 3 plays just about everything, it's a fantastic multi-media player.
