AVCHD not playing in Windvd 9 plus

Post by Findtruely »

I was having jerky results with less than perfect sync when playing AVCHD files in other free media players so referencing the source below,
Updated 5/14/08: Corel WinDVD 9 Plus. $79.99; trial download does support AVCHD files, but only by dragging and dropping them onto the player. According to a Corel rep: "'open from folder' functionality is for DVD folders only. There is no definition of an AVCHD folder in the AVCHD spec. AVCHD folders have the exact same structure as BDMV folders so, for security concerns expressed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, Corel WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray does not support AVCHD or BDMV folder playback." (emphasis mine). This is odd, since other products will read from the BDMV folders.

I just installed Windvd 9 plus but dragging an avchd file (.mts or .m2ts) into the player failed to play the video.

What's the problem?

I've found this app cannot open these files other than by the 'Source\Open from folder' interface. If you've converted to .m2ts, by transferring with Guide Menu, then you can rename the extensions to mpg and they will open. You will lose lots of WinDVD9 features though. You cannot use A-B, chapter select, etc. It will just play.

In my experience, you cannot direct WinDVD9 to open .mts or .m2ts files by means of the Windows\Open with dialog. It is somehow disabled.

If you have a Canon camcorder, you will need to use the Backup Utility to gain most features in WinDVD9. The backup is horribly inflexible. Then select the 'Steams' folder.

The whole Canon\Corel arrangement is just cobbled together. Its purely anti-consumer and as misleading (by omission) as possible. Neither the backup utility or WinDVD can even remember a previous folder path, requiring navigation every time.

When Corel completely ignores a request for info, that should be taken to mean (is code for) the feature is not available. Personally, I find that sort of approach very offensive.
